Talryne

Talryne

Talryne waited until the other apprentices were gone before approaching the journeywoman. "You ... wanted to see me?"

"Yes, Talryne," Endoriel replied with a smile. Same time she went through in head of what the gossip had said about this young woman. She was new to the weyr, new Weyrleader's mate and dragonless rider.

"Did I do something wrong?" Everything she did, right or wrong, was more noticeable. She was new here, and much older than any of the other apprentices, and it made her stand out. Sometimes it made her want to curl into a ball and disappear, but she kept going, day after day.

"No, nothing is wrong. I was assigned to check your studies so far. Since you transferred from another weyr, we don't know what you can do and can't do," Endoriel replied with motherly smile.

"Oh, well." Talryne eased, but only a little. "I can knit. I'm not much good at the other stuff."

"Hmm, if you want to be a journeywoman one day, you need to learn more than that. There's not much use for knitted clothes in this climate," Endoriel remarked.

"I know," she said quietly. She was back to not doing anything useful. Knitting still made her happy, but here it was little more than a useless hobby.

"What does interest you, besides knitting. Weaving, sewing, lacemaking, tapestries?" Endoriel asked. "Personally, I like making and designing clothes, especially gather dresses."

"I like patterns. That's why I like knitting. The way it all fits together ... it just makes sense to me," Talryne said. "I thought I would like tapestries, too. There's even more pattern in that. But the one I made turned out awful."

"It's just matter of practice. I can introduce you to our tapestry specialist, and he can teach you," the older woman said. She leaned towards her confidentially and whispered :"I'm terrible at the tapestries and my laces always end up to a one big tangle."

"I suppose I can try." Talryne felt a fluttery nervousness in her stomach, but there was a hint of excitement. Her first few knitting projects had been awful, too. Maybe she could learn.

"There's no harm done by trying," Endoriel said encouragingly.

"I guess not."

"Look, if you have problems or you just need a listener, talk to me," Endoriel offered. There was something so vulnerable in Talryne, that made her feel protective. She looked like she could use a friend.

Talryne managed a weak smile. "Okay. Thank you." She had to start all over again, all these new people to get used to. This woman, at least, wasn't treating her like she was broken or giving her judging looks because she was the Weyrleader's lover.

"No problems. Now, are you good at sewing in tiny little glass beads into a cloth? 'Cause I got this project and I could really use a second pair of hands?"

"I haven't had much experience with that, actually," Talryne said. "But I could try."

"You only need a good eyes and to do small, neat stitches," Endoriel said.

"Small I can do, but I might need extra work with the neat part." A faint little smile touched her lips.

"Practice makes perfect. Come on," Endoriel smiled.

"Okay."
