Cosani

Dear Salubri,

I've been thinking a lot about the Hatching. And about you, too. I think you're really pretty. And with the Hatching soon, we might Impress, and then all we could do is hold hands until our dragons were old enough. This might be our only chance. I keep wanting to ask you, but I'm afraid you'll say no. So I wrote you this note. If you don't like me, just rip it up and don't tell anyone. But if you like me, come meet me after lights out down at the beach. By those two big rocks that lean together.

See you. I hope.

-Love Eddron

The note was slipped in between two hides she was working on for class.

Salubri's heart skipped a beat as she read the words written upon the parchment. Eddron wanted to meet with _her_? All of the candidates had a crush on the handsome young man. Most expected him to impress a bronze. That was certainly how Salubri viewed him! The male candidate had yet to show any interest in any of the other girls other than passing friendship. She could barely believe that he would be interested in her! With a grin stretched wide across her face, the young girl folded her note and tucked it into a safe place. Oh yes, she would certainly be there to meet him!

Across the room, Cosani only allowed herself a glance out of the corner of her eye, and the merest upward twitch of her lips.

The day couldn't have gone slower. Classes were long and boring and chores seemed to have taken forever to get done. Finally, however, dinner time came and after that free time. Still the sun seemed hesitant to set and Salubri was more than eager when the call came for lights out. She was in her bed but she hadn't bothered to get undressed. Instead, she waited until she heard the soft, gentle snores of the other girls, then slipped from her bed and crept silently from the room.

After a moment, Cosani followed her. She crept only as far as the door and then peered around it, watching the other girl make her way across the Bowl. When Salubri had faded from view, she went back to bed, wondering how long Salubri would wait out there on the beach.

The beach was dark and deserted when she got there, so Salubri perched upon a rock outcropping to wait. As she did so, she fussed with her skirts, settling them there, then here, then redoing them once more. From time to time, she reached up to fiddle with her hair, frowning in annoyance at the breeze that continuously teased it. Her eyes kept wandering to the moons and how they were rising. A quarter candlemark passed, then a half, then a full. Still no sign of Eddron.

After the second candlemark had gone by, Salubri took out the note that she had placed into her pocket and smoothed it. She held it at an angle to best catch the light. At first she had been annoyed, sitting there all by herself. But as more and more time passed, she became angry. She read that note again, her frown tightening as she gritted her teeth.

It wasn't from Eddron.

She should have realised that from the very beginning. The tone of the note was far too simple, as if written by a child. No, that wasn't Eddron at all. So who wrote it?

Cosani, of course. The girl crumpled the note then stuffed it back into her pocket. So she thought she was begin funny, eh? Salubri realised she was going to have to be a lot more careful about things thanks to that little fat ovine of a girl. Salubri slid off the rock and started to stomp her way back to the barracks. Cosani, too, had better be more careful. Things were heating up.
