"This seat free?" asked K'deren as he took a seat next to red haired brownrider.
"Yes, sir, it is." B'ram moved his mug of ale out of the way so the Wingsecond to have room for his plate.
"It's B'ram, isn't it?" asked K'deren. While the newcomer wore the knots of the Weyrleader's wing, after the tragedy that had befallen them, newcomers in themselves were noticeable.
"That's right, sir," the wingrider nodded. "And I would assume you are K'deren."
His fellow brownrider nodded. "T'moran's second."
"Didn't I hear that you were actually made a Wingleader for a while there?"
"For a few days, there was a need to hold things together, after..."
K'deren's voice trailed off. It wasn't easy to talk about the accident and he suspected that it may be sometime yet before he could talk of it without feeling a stab of pain as Vonalie came to mind.
B'ram nodded understanding at look in the wingsecond's eye. He knew nothing of the reason behind his deep sorrow, but it was a shadow he had seen in several rider's eyes. "Even so, a great honor rarely bestowed on a brownrider."
"One I'm not sure I deserved. But I think it helped, helped me to deal with things after." The focus was certainly what he had needed, had he time to dwell on things, well he and the children might be suffering more than they still were now.
B'ram reached for the wine left on the table and filled a glass for K'deren. "Who did you lose?"
"My weyrmate," he said.
The wingrider shook his head sadly. That was a pain he, luckily, did not know. "Shards, I'm sorry."
"I will always miss her, but there's our daughter. I have her at least."
"No one who wasn't here to see it will ever understand what happened that day, will they." B'ram could feel it. He was new, and he was welcomed, and his being there was appreciate. And still, there was a common memory that he did not share, and there were moments such as this when he felt that seperation.
"I don't want anyone else to feel like that, ever," said K'deren quietly. "We'll get through this and fight thread."
"You know, we're getting better at fighting Thread. I remember those first few Falls. They were nightmares at Far Island. I'm sure they were everywhere. But little by little we've improved. Hopefully, soon, we need never live in fear of such a thing ever happening again."
"Only another fourty something turns," replied K'deren. "We might not see it, but our children will." "Well, I for one am determined to live to see that day. And I have a feeling you will too."
"I hope so."
