Cosani

Cosani

"Mel?" Cosani said. "I need to ask you something."

"Sure." Mel looked up from where she was mending a tunic that had gotten snagged on a nail while working with the beasts. She flashed a smile at the other candidate and ignored her work for a moment. "Ask away!"

"You know about animals and stuff, right? Where can I find some tunnelsnakes? Dead or alive, it doesn't matter."

"Tunnelsnakes?" Why in the world would Cosani want tunnelsnakes? "Well, a good place to look is anywhere where it's dark, small crevices, that sort of thing or you can look for holes by the ones that bury into the ground. I wouldn't recommend trying to get any alive for if you get bit...well...trust me, you don't want to get bitten." Mel shook her head, then frowned. "Why do you want tunnelsnakes?"

"There's some girls I need to pay back." Cosani's eyes grew hard. "Dead is fine."

Pay back? "Uh...what...what happened?"

"The invited me swimming just so they could steal my sharding clothes!" Every time she thought about it, it made her angry all over again.

The frown that creased Mel's features deepened. "What? Why? Why would they want to steal your clothes? And who did it?"

"Because they thought it would be funny to pick on me," Cosani grumbled. "Do you want to help me get some dead tunnelsnakes, or not?"

"Well it was _not_ funny nor was it right." It was down right mean! Why did people have to act like that? "But doing something back to them isn't right either, Cosani. I don't approve of what they did, but I can't help you get revenge. Two wrongs don't make a right."

"Fine. I'll get them myself." Cosani turned to go and then paused. "Tattle on me, and I'll make you regret it."

"Cosani..." Mel stiffened at the girl's tone of voice. "This isn't the right thing to do and I wasn't the one who did that to you. Don't go snapping at me!"

"I'm not snapping." Cosani tried to keep her tone calm. "I just want to make sure, since you're not helping me, you at least won't tattle on me."

"You threatened me." Mel pointed out. "That's no way to treat someone who's trying to be your friend. As for tattling..." The girl squirmed. She wasn't sure she liked the idea of what Cosani was doing but... "Promise you will only use dead tunnel snakes and I won't breathe a word." Live ones wouldn't be good for anyone involved.

"For my _own_ sake, I'll only get dead ones." It would be more satisfying to hear them screaming over live tunnelsnakes and watch them running around the barracks, but she definitely didn't like the idea of getting bitten.

Well, at least that was something, as long as it kept her from using live ones. "Promise?" She pressed, eyes narrowing. Perhaps she should tell the headwoman. Would she be the person to tell? No. She had said if Cosani got dead ones she wouldn't say anything.

"Yes. Then there's no chance of biting me _or_ ending up in the wrong place," Cosani said.

"All right then." Mel agreed, however hesitantly. "I won't say anything." **This once.**

"Thanks," Cosani said. It wouldn't do to have the other girl mad at her, so she should at least try to be nice. Now she had to go round up for dead tunnelsnakes. **Tunnelsnakes for tunnelsnakes,** she thought.
