Description: N'vanik asks Zelle about issues in the wing.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 12, day 13 of Turn 4
Drills had just ended and riders were stripping off their gear so they wouldn't melt in the heat. }:Mine would like to speak with yours,:{ Loseth told Rillith.
**He wants to speak with me?** Zelle turned to let her gaze fall upon the weyrleader as she slid her helmet from her head, hair shaking lose of its confines. **Okay. This doesn't bode well.**
}:It is fine.:{ Rillith assured her, then spoke to Loseth in return, }:She comes.:{ Zelle tucked her helmet beneath her arm and made her approach to the new Weyrleader. Once she reached him, she bobbed her head politely and stated, "Sir, Rillith was told you wish to speak with me." Her mind whirred over the drills. No, they had been in sync, they had not gotten out of line, their timing was good, so why would he need to speak with her?
"Yeah. I want to meet with all my wingriders, even if it's just for a few minutes," N'vanik said. "I don't know anything about you, except what I've seen the last few sevendays. I want to know what your and your dragon's strengths are, your weaknesses, any concerns you have. I need a better sense of what each pair's best position is."
"I see." Well, she supposed that was a good thing, right? Still, he was not the man she wanted for Weyrleader and she thought that, surely, he'd be able to tell strength and weaknesses simply from observing during drills. "Rillith's strengths are her speed and agility. We're also used to high winds and rapidly changing currents, so we have no problem compensating. Her weakness is her stamina." Of course, that was a common weakness to all greens. After all, greens only flew half of a Threadfall.
He nodded. "Anything else? Any preference for where you fly -- front, middle or back?"
"Where ever I'm needed most, sir." Zelle cast a glance back toward her dragon. The green sat patiently, neck curled around so that her head lay upon the ground, one large, whirling blue eye watching them.
Well, that was good. He needed flexible pairs. "Any concerns about the wing ... or anything else?"
Of course she had concerns. Mainly they were about him. Zelle didn't like him personally. She was going to show him the respect his position demanded, but that was about all she was going to do. She didn't really care to try to get to know him beyond that. "The only thing that comes to mind, sir, is making sure that everyone is able to compensate for erratic winds. I saw a couple of riders struggling with that."
"Yeah, I've noticed that too." And he might have been a little rough when pointing it out. "I might have them pair up with someone who has it down and do some extra work outside drills."
Zelle wondered why he was asking her all this. He had a wingsecond, fellow leaders who would surely help keep an eye on things in the wing. Wasn't that the reason why they held the positions they did? It felt odd. "If you feel it's necessary sir." She stated after a moment, uncertain what else to say.
He studied her. "If you think it's a dumb idea, you should just say so."
"Sir, it's not my place to state whether or not your ideas or dumb." Zelle stated sincerely. "But since you seem to want my opinion, I don't think it's dumb. I think it's a good idea." Though why he needed her say in the matter she had no sharding idea.
"Good. Thanks for being honest," he said. "I'd rather have honesty than have everyone act like they have to agree with me just because I have these fancy knots."
Zelle almost bit her tongue and nodded. "Yes sir. Is there anything else you wish to discuss with me?"
"No, that's it. You're free to go."
"Yes sir." With that, Zelle turned on the balls of her feet and headed back to her dragon.
}:See, it wasn't bad.:{ Her dragon crooned, nudging her gently as she drew near.
**No, though I still don't understand why he was asking _me_ questions.**
}:He just wanted to know.:{
**He should be able to take note of some things himself, or discuss this sort of stuff with his wingsecond, not me.** The greenrider shrugged and patted her lifemate. **Come on, let's get back to the weyr. I want to get changed.**
