Finding A Weyr

Writers: AL, Jane
Date Posted: 16th July 2008

Characters: Zelle, Ylisahn
Description: Zelle goes to the headwoman to pick out a weyr.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 10, day 24 of Turn 4

"You're Ylisahn?" The question was asked just as Zelle's gaze slipped over to take note of the knots upon the woman's shoulder. She flashed the Headwoman a bright smile and stuck her hand out in greeting. "I'm Zelle. I'm transferring here and need to find a weyr."

"Welcome to Dolphin Cove Weyr, greenrider," Ylisahn said with a smile for the young woman. "Have you been here before?"

"Oh yes." Zelle nodded. Ah, if only the headwoman knew. "I've been visiting a lot as of late. I have friends here."

"Come through to my office and we'll look over the available weyrs, then. You'll have some idea of where you would like to be accommodated?"

"Are there any weyrs that have a view of the sea?" The greenrider queried, motioning for the Headwoman to lead and then walking alongside her.

"Ahh, now that will be a bit harder." In the office off the dining cavern Ylisahn pulled down a roll of floorplans and spread them on a high bench she had had installed for just such work. "You've seen the shape of the Weyr, so it's only these weyrs here," she ran a finger over the landward arc of the broken caldera, "that can see out to sea, and some of those only from their ledges. As you can imagine, the ones with the best views and best rooms are taken."

Zelle nodded slowly. "I understand, but if there is something available, even if the view is only from the ledge, that would be great."

"All right. There are a few here, and the reason they're empty is that they're so high up. It means if you have to use the corridors then to have a lot of stairs to climb. There's one here," Ylisahn tapped on another careful representation of a weyr and the rider's room attached, "but the rider's quarters are very small." She smiled at the greenrider. "You can see the sea from the window that's been put through the cliff, but your bed would only be a narrow one. Do you want to hear about the other weyrs? Ones that wouldn't have a sea view?
They're cooler, you know, the ones that are south facing."

"I don't mind high." Zelle said softly after a moment's reflection.
"Could I take a look at one of those weyrs?"

"Certainly. The only other option is on this outside wall of the Weyr but there's no internal access to any of those weyrs."

"I wouldn't mind that either." Zelle stated with a smile. It certainly would make for good privacy.

"You need to think about how you'll get up and down if your dragon is asleep," Ylisahn cautioned. "While the weyrlings are very good at running people around they're like most youngsters - never around when you really need them."

"I'm sure I could manage." Zelle nodded. "Yes. Yes, I'll take one of those if there's one available. They seem to offer the best view of the sea." And that was what she really wanted after all. "At least, I'd really like to look at them." Probably best to look before one leaped.

"All right. These three on the top level, these two here, and these low ones here, though this one has a reputation for being a bit damp in storms. Will you be able to find them? I can get a weyrling to guide you if you need help."

Zelle looked over, counting the weyrs and the distance between then.
"No, I think I'll be all right. Shall I come back here after I check them out?"

"Yes please. Let me know which one you're taking, and if there's anything that needs repairing or replacing. I'll also need a few other details about you for my records."

"Great. I'll go check them out now." Zelle straightened, flashing a smile to the headwoman. "Thank you, Ylisahn."

"You're welcome, Zelle. And Welcome again to Dolphin Cove."
