Description: Jardon comes to visit Eliste, and makes an offer.
Location: Elsewhere on Pern
Date: month 9, day 18 of Turn 4
There were times that Eliste wondered if she was going to go crazy, staying cooped up in her room all day. Of course, she could sit in the chair, but that was still her stuck in her room. If she didn't have her quilting, she probably _would_ go crazy. Even then, she found herself wishing that she could take a walk outside, even if only for a few minutes, but she didn't dare.
The miniature quilts she was making helped some. Each had a picture on it, the river placed in that picture somewhere, taking part in its story. She could use her imagination and pretend that she was back on the riverboat, sailing up and down that river. It was better than nothing.
Jardon set aside the large sack of fabric, hoping that he had chosen appropriate colors and variety, not really understanding how the women of the riverboat decided which to use – even after growing up surrounded by his mother's and grandmother's work. Still, the woman had to need more by now, if she worked as those women did. He raised his hand and knocked on the door, wincing at the sound, much louder than he had planned.
Eliste paused in her sewing, looking up to the door. She wasn't expecting anyone. Had the riverboat come back already? It didn't seem like it was time to. Of course, the way time went these days, she found things muddling together. She called softly, "Come in."
The young man unlatched the door and picked up his burden once more before edging the door open and entering. He managed a tentative smile for the woman. "I brought you more fabric. If you don't need it I can take it away, but I thought you might have used what my gram brought for you." "Oh!" Of all people, Eliste honestly hadn't expected Jardon.
ThoughVaheri had said he would be checking on her from time to time, he hadn't seemed to keen on doing so when last they met. Her gaze slid from him to the sack and she nodded, speaking slowly and quietly, "Thank you. More fabric is always appreciated."
"I hope what I brought is alright," he continued. "I chose pieces that looked. . . interesting. Of course, I don't have the sense of color that my gram seems to have." "I'm sure it's wonderful, thank you." Eliste was certain she could find use for anything he found for her. Even ugly fabrics could be made beautiful if just used in the right fashion. "You...you didn't have to do this, but I am grateful."
"My gram told me to look after you," he told her, then blushed. "But I wanted to check in and see that you were doing alright." "It's very kind of you. I..I'm doing fine." At least, as fine as she could be considering she couldn't do anything outside of bed or chair.
Well, she could relieve herself and bathe, but that was about the extent of her excitement. "A little tired of this," Eliste admitted, rather surprised that she was doing so, "But fine."
He nodded in acknowledgement. "Even those things we enjoy can become boring when we're denied other tasks." He cleared his throat. "We have a wheeled chair in the storeroom. Would the healer allow you a short trip outdoors if the weather were mild?" "I don't know." Eliste hadn't realised they had a wheelchair. To go outside again and to be able to look at something beyond the walls where she slept. Sunlight was so much better to work by as well. "He never said I couldn't," She stated slowly, "Just that I needed to not exert myself and lie down on my left side when I sleep. I...I know he didn't want me walking around too much." She wouldn't be exerting herself in a wheelchair, would she? Not if someone else was pushing. And she certainly wouldn't be walking around!
"The chair has been in storage for a while, so I'll get it cleaned up," Jardon told her. "Then if the weather holds, I could return tomorrow and take you outdoors for a while? In the meantime, you could check with the healer as to any restrictions." "I will do that." The prospect of being able to get out of the room for a while cheered her. It would be nice to see something other than for walls and a door. Of course, the fabric and quilts were pretty to look at, but it just wasn't the same. "I...thank you Jardon."
He smiled, this time a genuine reaction, not forced. "You're very welcome, Ellina."
