Exploring, Not Lost

Writers: Jane, Rochelle
Date Posted: 31st March 2008

Characters: Shaelis, K'hetah
Description: Shaelis finds the Wingleader "exploring."
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 8, day 5 of Turn 4

Shaelis whistled softly to herself as she wandered through the corridors, an older tune of hers that she had always liked, but had never achieved much popularity. She had just finished meeting Aothart for lunch, and they had made some very satisfying plans to visit Opal Cove hold that restday. Aothart was hoping to catch the caravans as they passed through to try and get another position, but Shaelis had merely smiled. Sedentary life was hard on both of them, but especially Aothart, and she couldn't see a southern caravan talking on an unknown eighty turn old man as a guard no matter how experienced.

She turned the corner toward her office, hoping that she wouldn't have some officious idiot sitting in it wanting to complain about her upsetting the "natural order of things" again. The man that morning had no idea how close he came to getting strangled when he'd accused her presence of being no better than a wherry egg in a dragon's clutch.

She continued whistling when she saw the other figure coming around the far corner, but before she could groan inwardly, the knots on the younger man's shoulder told her a different story.

"It's been a while since I saw a wingleader in these halls." She drawled with a smile. "But you look far more lost than someone wearing Dolphin Cove's colors should be. I'm guessing you're K'hetah then?"

"I am." He smiled at the old woman, noting her Master's knots and harper colours. It wasn't particularly unusual where he came from, but was probably noteworthy in this Hall. "And I'm not lost, Master -?"

"Shaelis." She said promptly, extending her hand. "I'm a composer." She added with a smile. He was tall enough that he almost, but not quite, could meet her eyes directly.

"And I'm K'hetah, as you guessed. I'm a dragonrider."

Her smile quirked. "I'd noticed." She shook his hand firmly. "So what brings Cyclone's Wingleader to our little corner of the weyr?"

"Not _lost_," he reiterated, though the amusement in his expression undermined his statement, "Just interested. Exploring. Nosy?"

"Lost." She repeated knowledgeably, amused. "Exploring is acceptable, but those who explore in the wrong areas at the wrong times are liable to get in trouble."

His smile lit his face. "I haven't been in trouble for Turns - not since my wild days as a young and heedless bronzerider. Regrettably I feel like that's a sad admission to make."

"It is only if you consider those days to be gone. Otherwise you're simply good at staying out of trouble." Shaelis said with a chuckle. "Is there somewhere in particular you're trying to find? Or are you just..."
Her eyes twinkled. "...Nosy?"

"I already admitted to that, didn't I?" he said with a sigh. "Do you, perhaps, have time to show me around this Hall-in-a-Weyr? I've never come across such a thing before. Not a whole, official Hall."

"Neither have I." She admitted with a grin. " As far as I know, this is the only official Hall-in-a-Weyr on Pern." She glanced down the corridor toward her office, and decided that she could make all the time she wanted. If there was anyone in there, it wasn't like they had an appointment... "What would you like to see? This hall..." She gestured vaguely along the corridor. "...if mostly offices. That one's mine, and there's some practice rooms along this direction." She gestured behind her.

The bronzerider followed along, happy to have a guide - and an interesting one at that.
