N'mor crumpled the letter into his fist, then smoothed it down again, read it and crumpled it again. He could probably recite it from memory already.
He sighed and kicked the table's leg. It was obvious that something was troubling him. N'mor's dilemma was that he had no one to talk to in this weyr. Everyone he knew was left behind to Dragonsfall Weyr. He hadn't had change to make new friends yet and worse, some of the locals seem to think he had stolen their dragon by impressing Ked.
"I thought I'd be less tired as she grew," Ch'bal muttered as he plopped into the chair. "Why do I feel more exhausted each day?" He started as he realized that the person next to him was frowning. "Oh. . . hello. I hope that I'm not disturbing you?"
"Why would you be? This is a public area," N'mor replied.
"Yes. . ." the young greenrider ventured haltingly, "but if you'd rather be alone?"
"Actually... I wouldn't mind to chat with someone. Would take my mind off from other things. That is, if you don't mind being seen with a bronzerider," N'mor replied and softened his words with friendly grin.
That suggestion brought a blush from Ch'bal. "You'd probably have more cause to worry about that than I would."
"As long as you don't try to kiss me," N'mar said jokingly.
"Uh, no." The young greenrider was still struggling to understand what the Impression of his dragon really meant to him, so that certainly would _not_ happen. "So what's bothering you?"
"Family," N'mor shrugged.
"Ah. . ." Ch'bal nodded knowingly. "Do they live nearby?"
"No, they live at the Dragonsfall Weyr. That's the problem. They are having a hard times and I'm stuck here, unable to do nuthing, until Kedventh is older and we're cleared to /between/ on our own." Which was still in future, even if they were now practising for it.
"Yeah, I can understand that," the other weyrling agreed. "My sister and I left our grandfather behind when we were brought to the Weyr and we haven't heard from him since. I'd like nothing more than to fly there and find out how he's getting along."
"Yeah. Well, it won't be much longer anymore untill we are allowed to travel on our own," N'mor said, brightening up a bit. After all they were _senior_ weyrlings now, recently promoted.
"Yes, but we'll also have more responsibility," Ch'bal reminded him.
"We've much to do preparing to fight Thread."
"Yeah. And they actually let fifteen turns old like me fight the Thread."
The greenrider turned to regard him. "Maybe not at other Weyrs, but this one includes fifteen-turn-olds in the wings."
"I know. My sister had to wait until she was sixteen before they let her join the fighting wing," N'mor replied.
"My sister is fifteen and will be joining the wings at the same time that I do."
"Must be odd feeling," N'mor said.
Ch'bal nodded. "I've always looked out for her so now I'll be worrying for Vaith, myself, and her."
N'mor was actually relieved to hear that someone else had worries because of family too. He gave the greenrider an understanding nod.
"And you?" Ch'bal glanced toward him. "Do you worry over your sister? Are you worried about what will happen when we get up there?"
"Yeah, I do, even if she's older than me. But I would rather die that let her know I worry about her," N'mor confessed in confiding tone. He actually meant both of his sister even if he didn't use plural.
"It probably would only annoy her anyhow," put in the other weyrling.
"Since Impressing Toncha has become much more vocal about how much she hates my worrying."
"Sisters, go figure them out," N'mor chuckled.
"I've tried," admitted Ch'bal, "and have decided that it's hopeless." He half rose from his seat. "And now I'm too tired to try. I think I'll get some rest before Vaith needs anything."
