K'deren

K'deren

D'ren pulled off his helmet and gloves and trotted over to his Wingsecond. "I just wanted to let you know, sir," he said quietly, "I think it should have been you. You've more than earned the leadership."

"Thank you," replied the brownrider. A wry smile crossed his lips, D'ren wasn't the first, and he suspected he would not be the last to say something like this. "It was bound to happen sooner rather than later."

"With J'darin in charge, yeah," D'ren said.

K'deren gave the youngster a look, no matter what, J'darin was the Weyrleader and deserved respect. But he could understand where the lad was coming from on this. K'hetah, the new Wingleader seemed like a good man and time would tell if he could prove that.

"The new Wingleader is here for a reason."

D'ren's gaze dropped a little. "I understand that. I've got nothing against K'hetah."

"And nor should you, time will tell what sort of a leader he is."

"Yes, sir. I'm sure he'll be a fine wingleader," D'ren said.

"And you're developing into a fine wingrider. Keep on as you are and you'll be a credit to the wing and the Weyr."

The young bronzerider smiled. "Thank you." The praise was welcome, especially from someone he admired so much.

"Perhaps one day, in time you yourself will be handing out the compliments to another young rider," said K'deren. As a bronzerider the sky was his limit. This lad could end up Weyrleader one day.

"I hope that's a long way off," D'ren laughed lightly. "I still have a lot to learn."

}:We could lead,:{ Menanth said.

**Yes, love. But it would be better to get more experience first.**

"So long as you know that, you'll never stop learning. Even now I'm still learning about things. Keep that in mind," K'deren assured the lad.

"Yes, sir." The young man nodded, then turned thoughtful. "How do you do it? How do you lead people into Threadfall knowing they could get hurt, or killed?" Just flying Fall was enough physical and mental strain, and the stress of the hurricane recovery still weighed heavily on him. D'ren and Menanth had even carried some of the Queen's precious eggs, one of the biggest responsibilities of his life. It was hard to imagine having responsibilities on that level all the time.

"You let your dragon help you," explained K'deren. "He chose you because he knew that you could do these things. And as for the risk, we were all aware of that once we took to the sands." It had been different before the pass, but riding was still dangerous then, although in nowhere near the same manner.

"His confidence does seem to be unshakable," D'ren replied with a slight smile.

"You need to balance him, together the pair of you will prevent over-confidence, which is dangerous."

The young bronzerider nodded. "We're a good match. We compliment each other. I suppose every rider feels like that." He smiled.

"They do indeed."

D'ren started to say something else, then his eyes briefly unfocused.
"I should go, if that's alright with you. Menanth wants his straps off."

"Of course, go and see to him." "Thank you, sir." D'ren saluted and hurried off.
