"Shards, Biri, I can't believe you're just _sitting_ there!" A'tep elbowed him gently in the ribs. "Seshoa is looking right at you and you just ignore her? What, are you turning green on us?"
Birigundi rolled his eyes. "I told you, I told Nia that I'd try and stop by tonight."
"Oh come on," J'ness groaned. "It's lot like you're _weyrmated_ to Nia or anything. You've done your duty by her and the baby. Now she just has to understand that you have needs too!"
"Did I _say_ she didn't understand?" Birigundi shot back, though he knew full well Nia didn't. He glanced over at the entrance to the kitchens. Nia was there somewhere, wipping down tables, collecting dishes, folding napkins... She'd see and then she'd be all hurt... "I told her I'd go and I don't break promises."
"You said you'd try," A'tep pointed out. "Just tell her you tried and it didn't work!"
This was getting old really fast. Birigundi made the mistake of looking in Seshoa's direction, catching her eye over the rim of her mug. Shards, she was the kind of woman he used to think he'd give his first born child to bed. But the truth was, he wouldn't give up Lyndi for anything, or Nia either. "You go for her, A'tep. I made a promise."
"But she's looking at _you_!" the bronzerider all but wailed. "For shards sake! The way she's looking at you, you could have her and still get to Nia before the night's over! Don't be such a prude! This is painfully pathetic to watch."
The certainly stung Birigundi's pride. "I'm not a prude. You know full well A'tep."
"I say Nia has turned you into a sharding prude, Biri, and that's the truth of it," J'ness agreed with the bronzerider.
"What did I miss?" Horand asked as he set four fresh mugs of ale on the table between them.
"Biri's decided to reclaim his Hold-bred tepidness," A'tep grumbled, grabbing a mug.
"Ah, now, come on guys. Lay off Biri," the technician sighed as he slipped into the seat next to the rather irritated Candidate. "It's not his fault. Women can make a man lose his edge."
Shards, they were just not going to let up, were they! "I have _not_ lost my edge," Birigundi growled.
"Sure you have," Horand said understandingly, putting an arm on his friends shoulder. "And its ok. I know there was a time when you could have any woman you put your mind to, but I think we all just have to accept the fact that those days are past. You've gone back to being a Holder-boy now. We just have to learn to accept you the way you are..."
And just what was _that_ supposed to mean?! "I have not lost my edge and I could still have any woman I want, thank you very much."
"Sure, Biri," his friend said, giving him a sarcastically reassuring shoulder pat, "Sure you can."
"What you all think I'm not going after Seshoa because I know I can't have her? I could have her. I'll sharding prove it!" Birigundi grabbed his mug and eyed each one in turn. "Watch the master at work _boys_."
Seshoa smiled smugly to herself when she saw the Candidate square his shoulders and lift his chin at his mates, both defiant and proud. Shards, she loved young men like that. And when they brought that temperament to the bed... Feeling him glancing over at her, she fluttered her lashes over the rim of her mug, a come-hither grin twitching at the corners of her lips as she arched a dark brow expectantly.
Birigundi spared a glance towards the kitchens, hoping Nia would not see. This wasn't about feelings, or even hormones. This was about a man's pride. This was about holding his head high in front of his friends. Respect was what made a boy a man, and Nia deserved a man, anyway. She might not understand that, but that was just the way it was. "Greenrider Seshoa, isn't it?"
So. He knew her name. She liked that. "Mmmm." Seshoa gave him a sultry smile. "So you've heard of me, then."
"I make it a point to learn the names of beautiful ladies," he smiled, trying to resist the urge to turn his head and look for Nia.
She awarded his cute comeback with a grin and gestured for him to sit down beside her. Very close beside her. "I'm sure you do. And what else do you make a point of learning, hmm? Hopefully something that expands your horizons?" Her arm brushed against his. "There is much knowledge to be learned at the Weyr."
"Oh yes, I've been taking full advantage of all the Weyr has to offer." He had been so good not to make a show of his other women where Nia could see him, it was hard to go against that now. But his friends expected a show. His pride demanded it. "Of course, I'm always willing to learn more."
Shards, he was so easy! Seshoa tossed her dark hair over a shoulder, the movement bringing her face closer to his. Again, she gave him another grin, dark eyes gleaming coyly. "How willing?"
He didn't move, letting her lean into him, dark brows rising in mock surprise at her question. "I suppose that would depend on whether or not you have anything to teach me."
"And if I say yes?"
"I don't know," he said, rolling his eyes and scrunching his face thoughtfully. "I might need to have some proof that your qualified to teach me..."
"Oh really now?" she chuckled, amused by the new twist in the game. "What kind of qualifications are you looking for?" Slowly she inched a hand down to his, which rested against his thigh. "Name a couple for me."
"I don't know. If I let you have your scholarly way with me, what could I expect?" He gave her an almost daring smile as he looked down at her fingers.
Leaning forward, she let her lips linger over his, their breaths mingling.
"Tell me you want an example."
He grinned, his lips lightly brushing against hers. "I'm afraid I'm going to have to _insist_ on an example..." **And hope my friends are watching and Nia is not...**
"Well, if you _insist_," she murmured before she kissed him--and it certainly wasn't a small peck!
Whooping and hollering could be heard from the table where his mates sat watching the little drama play out. "That's the way, Biri!" "Get her, Biri!"
Birigundi groaned. Shards, there was no way Nia wasn't hearing those idiots! Why couldn't they just watch and keep their flaming mouths shut?!
The sound came out as a lusty moan to the greenrider's ears, which only encouraged her to kiss him deeper, elliciting more cheers from his so-called-friends. Maybe if he was lucky he could make a quick escape before Nia had a chance to see. Pulling back he whispered, "Let's get out of here. They've seen enough."
She raised a brow and glanced up at him, her expression very coy indeed. "Baby, they've hardly seen _anything_." Her fingers danced along his leg as she leaned closer again, nipping his ear. "Let's give them a real show."
Biri was caught now. Shards, maybe his friends were right. Maybe when Nia was around he was a flaming prude. But if he backed out now his friends would know and he'd never hear the end of it. **You never promised her anything...** He held onto that thought as he reached for her, vowing to give his friends no reason to ever doubt his resolve again.
Seshoa certainly didn't doubt his resolve. Shards, could the Candidate kiss! Pleased, she wriggled against him, growling softly as his mouth found its way to her neck. His reaction to her made her wonder if he would show the same kind of single-mindedness in the sleeping room. A knowing grin curved her lips as she dug her fingers in his hair, head tipping back. She rather thought he would. "Want another example?" she asked, voice husky.
"I think I'm ready to move on to a private lesson now," he murmured back. His friends certainly couldn't doubt him now.
"Come on, then."
Birigundi let her drag him towards the door. He passed a kitchen drudge, all but slamming piles of napkins on the table and his gaze for the briefest moment met familiar bright blue eyes, as blue as his daughter's before he dropped his gaze in shame. It was too late now. He'd deal with it in the morning. For now... for now he had something to prove.
