Tatitem cleared her throat behind the drudge, and the girl nearly jumped out of her skin before scurrying away. Tati sniffed. Served the girl right if she gave her a scare -she was supposed to be cleaning. She glanced across the table at who had attracted the drudge's interest, and settled herself for a moment across from him. "Good Morning, bronzerider."
K'ran had been looking over and old map and completely ignoring his cooling klah. He didn't notice the drudge, but he did notice when he was greeted verbally. He looked up, a bit surprised to see the Headwoman.
"Good morning, Headwoman." K'ran said with a smile. "How are you today?"
"Well enough. What have you there? Planning a visit?" She asked, remembering the times he'd requested some food for restday trips. He seemed to do quite a bit of traveling.
K'ran nodded. "I suppose I'm predictable." he commented. "This time it's a small islet in the Sea of Azov." he added.
"Sounds wet." Tati remarked. "Do you know someone there?"
"I did." K'ran admitted. "There isn't anyone there at anymore. There was a cothold there once which supported itself by fishing, but they all died in the Plague, and those who didn't scattered. One of the caravans I traveled with had a brother and sister, the last survivors of the cothold, who decided that becoming traders was the only path open to them."
Tatitem frowned. "If there's no one there, then why go looking for it?"
"Because the caravan I used to be with is coming through in a few days.
The last time they were here, they asked if I knew anything about how their old cothold was doing. If I can go back and find it today, I can tell them. If it's safe and they want, maybe I can bring them there." he explained. "They were my friends. Are my friends. And it's nice to be able to go back to where you were born."
"I suppose it would be." Tatitem said doubtfully. She'd had no desire to return to the Hall since the day her sister had been stripped of her beloved apprenticeship after the plague. "If it is safe, do you think they would move back? Or do they just want to look?" She asked.
"I'm not sure. After all, if you've been on the road for fifteen Turns, settled life might not be for you. But if it's habitable, maybe they'll know someone else who will want it. If there hasn't been any fishing, it might be quite profitable for the next few Turns." he explained. "it's nice to know at least."
"Well, if it makes them happy, I guess I can't see the harm." She said at last. She saw so many people from the holds trying to _escape_ their homes, that she was never certain how to take the people who actually _wanted_ to go back. "Are you planning on spending the entire day there?
It sounds as if it might be dangerous."
"It could be, but I don't think there's anything more than tunnelsnakes.
And no, not the whole day. Only a few candlemarks."
"That's good then. Will you be needing something to go with you? I believe you normally request a picnic of some sort."
"I would appreciate enough food for lunch. I plan to be back in time for dinner." K'ran said.
The Headwoman nodded. "I'll have one of the girls pack a basket. I assume you're going alone?" She asked with a raised eyebrow. The expedition certainly didn't sound like a date to her, but some people had strange tastes.
K'ran nodded. "I doubt anyone would really accompany me." he answered.
Privately, Tatitem agreed, but aloud she said "Is there something you would prefer for your lunch?"
"Anything that isn't wherry. I'm easy to please." K'ran said with a shrug.
"I appreciate it, Headwoman."
"I'll send one of the girls out with the basket. Have a good day."
