A New Harper

Writers: Patrick
Date Posted: 13th June 2007

Characters: Kosten, Faran
Description: Kosten finds his Hold a new Harper
Location: Amber Hills Hold
Date: month 4, day 11 of Turn 4

"I actually thought he'd be a good replacement."
Faran said as the latest candidate left his office.

"He seemed snobby to me." Kosten said as he tapped
his hide. The interviews had not been going very
well. Five potential Harpers and only one that seemed
worth the effort. Maybe he'd have to let his sister
keep teaching the children, if things kept going as
they were.

Faran sighed at the Holder's remark. "Well there are
three more harpers currently available here and I have
six sketches of available Journeymen from the Hall."
Faran said. "Why don't we just let the next one in
shall we?" Kosten nodded.

Faran walked up to the door and motioned to the next
lad to step in. "This is Harper Vosco. He recently
received his journeymen's knot and is looking for a
new location."

"Harper Vosco, why do you want to work at Hidden
Meadows?" Kosten asked for what felt like the
umpteenth time.

"Well I have seven younger siblings so I know how to
work with children. I spent my apprenticeship here at
Amber Hills and decided to come back to work with
Harper Faran, hoping he could help me find my own
Hold. I've been to three different holds in the past
two sevendays, but Hidden Meadows sounds like the
place for me." Vosco smiled.

"What are your specialties Vosco?" Faran asked the
lad, a smile on the corner of his lips.

"Oh yeah." Vosco said as his cheeks blushed a bit in
embarrassment. "My main instrument is the violin
sirs, though I'm a dab hand at most instruments. I
know all the Teaching Ballads and have good contact
with the Hall for new evening music." Vosco grinned.
"I also write my own music. I'm specializing in
composition."

"I see," Kosten was beginning to like this lad. New
songs in the evening would certainly liven up the
Hold. "What are you asking as payment?" He asked.
Vosco pulled out a well used but clean hide and handed
it to the Holder.

"I'd stay as long as you like." He said as he passed
the hide. Kosten looked it over. The price looked
reasonable, this lad knew he couldn't get much on his
first post. Room and board, food obviously, the only
request was that he got a window room.

"Why do you need a window room?" Kosten asked
curious.

"For Jespar." As Vosco said this a brown flit jumped
out of /between/ and landed on the lads shoulder. "I
don't need a window room, but Jespar doesn't like to
sun on the heights much, he likes it near my room."
The little brown nuzzled against his masters cheek.
Kosten merely nodded.

"Of course you would be in the room off of our
classroom. It has ample space and I believe two
windows. You have to share a bathing room with the
rest of the crafters down the hall but I'm sure they
won't mind." Kosten said offhandedly.

"Does this mean I got the post?" Vosco asked quickly.

"We'll start you off for a Turn, and if it all works
out we'll draw up a more permanent contract." Kosten
grinned as the lads face lit up with glee, though he
remained as calm and collected as possible.

"Thank you sir, you won't regret it." Vosco said
happily standing and offering the Holder his hand.

"Of course I won't." Kosten said as he shook Vosco's
hand. "Come back this evening after dinner and we'll
draw up the contract." Vosco nodded.

"Anything sir, thank you sir." Vosco bowed as he went
through the door. Once it had closed Kosten chuckled.

"Whats so funny?" Faran asked.

"Oh nothing. He just reminds me of myself when I
learned I was to get Hidden Meadows. Excited yet
still trying to show he was in control." Kosten
grinned. "He'll do well there."

"I'm sure he will Holder Kosten." Faran went around
his desk and pulled out some blank paper. "Care to
write up his contract?" He asked.

"Of course."
