DCW: Promising Weyrlings

Description: K'deren and L'pin discuss promising weyrlings in the senior class.

Date: month 4, day 6 of Turn 4

K'deren

**Donneth, can you bespeak Chaneth and ask him if his rider is free?** asked
K'deren of his brown. The current class of weyrling were soon to graduate,
and that meant placing them into wings. With Cyclone Wing still lacking a
Wingleader, that duty fell to him as far as it could. No doubt the
weyrleader would have his own requests, but he could definitely do with
some greenriders and a promising brownrider or two.

Chaneth consulted with L'pin. Finding his rider free, he spoke back to
Donneth. }:My rider will be there soon.:{

Within a few minutes, L'pin knocked on K'deren's door. "Wingsecond?" he
called.

"Come in," he called, his tone making it was clear that this was an
informal
meeting. "I sent for some klah and refreshments," he added.

"Excellent. I haven't eaten in a bit." L'pin admitted. "They run us
ragged. How are you doing?"

"In need of a break, and some new wingriders."

"Ahh. It falls to you to select them, then?" He imagined it was probably
as difficult for K'deren, under J'darin, as it was for him. "I certainly
can help suggest some prospects."

"I've a couple of slots for brownriders, and several for greenriders,"
began
K'deren, pausing as the refreshments arrived.

"Klah?" he asked.

"Please." L'pin said. "I think I can find you a few good weyrlings. This
is a promising clutch."

"So I hear." He poured klah into the waiting mugs, pushing one over to the
bluerider. "What can you tell me about them?"

"N'ref is a brownrider with a solid head on his shoulders, even if he is
16." L'pin began. "I think he'll go far with a good mentor. He's done
good as a group leader. There's also W'res, who's exceptional at flying,
but unfortunately he's a bit of a hothead. G'rali would be a good choice
if you don't mind waiting a few months. He doesn't Turn 16 until 4
months after graduation."

The wingsecond wrote the names down. "And the greenriders? I've heard good
things about them."

"M'neh's green can do some amazing tricks and would definitely be an
asset, but he can be a bit irresponsible. Liria has a grasp of
formations that's as good as some riders who have been there for a few
Turns. She's always in the right place."

"Potential Wingthird material some day?" asked K'deren. That sort of thing
was always good to watch, and nurture if possible.

"Almost certainly. I'll wager she'll not once lose her place when they
start flying with the wings."

"Care to stake a mark or two on that?"

"I'll stake two." L'pin immediately answered. He loved a gamble as much
as the next man, and was fairly confident.

"It's a deal!"

L'pin laughed. "If the weyrlings could only hear us now. I'm sure they
don't expect their leadership to be betting."

"Well I won't tell them if you don't," laughed K'deren in return.

"I promise not to." L'pin said. "Shaire and W'loa are two more solid
greenriders who could round out the total. Y'lir is a solid
bluerider.K'hain's bronze has more stamina than I've seen in a weyrling
bronze in awhile, but his ego is almost impossible. If he could be
persuaded to listen more, brag less, he'd be a good asset."

"I see, well as they are soon to come to us, I'll keep a look out for those
you mentioned."

L'pin nodded. "Let me know if you have any more questions about the
weyrlings." he said.

"I'll do that."

"Have a good day." L'pin said, rising to leave.

"And you too," replied the Wingsecond.
