Characters: Ylisahn, Sh'dori
Description: Ylisahn enlists the help of Sh'dori to regain access to the lower
caverns.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 3, day 19 of Turn 4
Notes: Ylisahn's Storm 11 - Storm eases, water starts to recede
"I think," Ylisahn said inspecting the mess ten steps below her, "that
we should start getting rid of this. The water seems to be going down
-" At least, she could no long see it glistening below them and the wind
noise was dropping, suggesting the storm was still moving away. "And
we'll have to go down there eventually, to see what we can do tonight."
"Yes," Sh'dori agreed, inspecting the stairwell critically. "It's a
quite a mess." He started to roll up his sleeves and dropped his tool
bag to the ground. He had been with Chamia and their the little girls,
when the call had come that woodcrafter was needed. He had collected his
tools and gone to help where he could. "Can I have few lads to help me?
I think best way to work is to form a line. I'll be attacking that mess
blocking the stairs and I hand out debris to the next lad, who will give
it to the next one here at the top and he'll pile it neatly so it won't
block the corridor."
"I'll rustle some up." It wasn't going to be hard; most of the
able-bodied who didn't have other duties were either crowded on weyr
ledges now the rain was easing, looking down on the water slowly
draining out of the Bowl, or gathered in the corridors near the tops of
the stairs, waiting for instructions.
She skipped back up to the landing and relayed the dragonrider's
instructions. She didn't get only men, but the lower caverns women that
volunteered certainly looked up to the task.
"They're all ready. Do you need anybody else down here? I've asked
around for more woodcrafters." She managed a tired smile. "No point in
me mucking around with tools I don't know how to use."
"I think we'll manage. I send a word if we need more help," Sh'dori
replied and looked his helpers.
"All right." There were a hundred other things Ylisahn could be doing,
and with one last glance at the blockage in the stairwell she turned
away. Then turned back, having caught sight of something that wasn't
recognisable as dining room furniture.
"Sh'dori ... Is that ..." She stopped and swallowed. She was the
Headwoman. She had to set an example of calm and she had to cope,
regardless of what she was dealing with. "That's fabric, down there."
Sh'dori spotted the same as she had. "So it seems. Do we know any storm
casualties?" Sh'dori said and asked. He moved down and started to remove
some of the depris to get to the cloth.
"I saw -" Ylisahn paused trying to gather the memories. "At least one
but probably not near this stairwell." She glanced at the brownrider.
"But who really knows?"
Sh'dori started pulling out various pieces of clothing. "Looks like
someone's laundry," he chuckled, holding up a lacy piece of undergarment.
Ylisahn took it from him and laughed. "Oh that's going to be a story to
tell." When this was all long enough in the past that they wanted to
tell stories about the storm and the flood.
Well, at least it wasn't some_one_. Although they might even encounter
those.
"I'll leave you to it, if I may. I need to get some people organised."
She waved a hand indicating the people milling at the top of the
stairs. "For going down to start work." She was worried that there
wouldn't be enough people in the Weyr to clean out everywhere the water
had been.
"All right. You know were to find me if you need me. This will keep me
occupied for some time," Sh'dori said. It was an awful lot of debris.
Furniture mostly but also occasional bush or tree branch and he thought
he saw a sail and ropes entangled to the mess.
"If I find more tools and people to wield them, I'll send them along,"
Ylisahn promised. "Thank you Sh'dori."
"You're welcome, Ylisahn," the brownrider replied.
