Description: The girls get ready for the arrival of their uncle Lineal
Location: Elsewhere on Pern
Date: month 4, day 10 of Turn 4
Notes: This just barely precedes "And They Arrive"

Tahna pulled Linli's blouse over her head, "Come on, mam'll be here soon." She carefully buttoned the girls' tunic at the neck and glanced over her shoulder as Jezz appeared at the door.

"Everyone's up top I now?" she asked.

"Yep," Jezz answered the older girl, skipping into the room to watch the final preparations. "What's took ya so long?

"She has." Tahna shook her head, "Mam only comes to see us three times a turn or so, and everyone's so excited about Lineal, no one has remembered me mam." She dragged the brush quickly through Linli's hair, "There, you look fine." She turned back to Jezz, is me Dar up there?"

"Umm, I don't know fer sure," the girl of five turns replied her face scrunching up, partly in concentration and partly because she didn't understand her cousin. "Course everyone is excited 'bout Uncle Lineal comin' cause he hasn't been back forever my mama says, and no one's ever met his wife, and he even has two kids, and they all come from the Weyr and everything," the younger girl's voice got louder and faster as she gained excitement. "Didn't forget about yer mam, it's just, well, it's just," her small voice faltered unsure what to say, "Well, I thought you was kinda mad at yer mum anyhow."

"Whether I'm mad at mam is no concern of yourn." Tahna replied, with a sniff. "And I _know_ 'bout Uncle Lineal, and his wife, but I need to make sure me Dar is behavin' himself."

"Dar always does whatever he's told." Linli said quietly, "He doesn't do anything he isn't told." She fidgeted, "Is it alright for me to go upstairs with Jezz?"

"Aye, off you go and make sure you stay clean!" Tahna called after her as Linli took off out of the door.

"C'mon Jezz!" Linli called over her shoulder.

Tahna waved the other child away and began to straighten the room.

"What colour d'you reckon the dragon'll be?" Linli asked Jezz as they climbed the stairwell.

"Have to be big to carry everyone," Jezz enthused.
"Maybe a bronze!"

"They could come on two and then they'd only hafta be green." Linli pulled herself up the stairs by the rail, turning to look down at her cousin. "Wanna ride one?"

"Are you kidding? Of COURSE I do! Wouldn't you?"

"No." Linli shook her head, "I like to look at them, but.." she shook her head, "I just don't wanna."

"They are awful big and they fly way up high," Jezz sympathized, "But I'd still like ta ride one. What'd you think the kids'll be like? Mama says the girl's our age!"

"Really?" Linli looked doubtful, not because she didn't believe Jezz but their aunt Neke hadn't said anything to her apart from the fact there would be other children coming to live on-board, with them.
"What's her name? Did your mama tell you?"

Pausing toward the top of the stairs, Jezz's face screwed up in concentration. Finally she shrugged, "She tol' me but I don't 'member. It's kinda like yours. Starts with 'Lin' and I got to give her the quilt off my own bed the one that mama made for me!"

"How come you gotta do that?" Linli asked, as she reached the top of the stair and looked down at her cousin. "I don't hafta give her nothing."

"Well, I didn't really hafta, but I wanted to, 'cause she's comin' here away from what she knows and I wanted to do somethin'" the girl paused, "I don't know," she said with a shrug, "I want her to like it here with us." She broke out in a big grin, "We can get in even more 'ventures with three of us!"

"Yeah, as long as Tahna doesn't interfere." Linli nodded, her eyes, for the moment glittering with mischief.

"I heard that!" Tahna growled from below them.

Linli grabbed Jezz's hand and dragged her the last few steps. "C'mon, they're all gathered, and I wanna see them arrive!"

Jezz giggled and raced with her cousin every bit as excited to see the much awaited new arrivals.
