"I'm Not Crazy" but ... well, real life can be a b**** sometimes. :)
She couldn't take it anymore! As Saria stumbled down to the infirmary, clutching her head, she wondered what all this meant. The voices, the headaches, it was almost unbearable. She stopped infront of the first healer she could find.
"Please," she begged. "I need something to make the headaches stop."
Yardan extended an arm and escorted the young women into the infirmary. "How bad is the headache on a scale of one to ten? Ten being the worst." He led her into one of the treatment area's and helped her up onto an examination table. Turning, he reached up and dimmed the light in the room, whilst looking for a cold compress.
"Its a seven right now I think. But at times its a two and others its a ten. But it never goes away."
She was greatful for the dimmed light, bright lights just hurt her eyes, which added to her head pain.
Coming back from the bench, he held a wetted cloth in his hands. "Here, just let this rest on your forehead for a little while, it may help ease the pain. I've added a few drops of lavendar and peppermint oils." He looked down at the girls face, the strain was showing, but had eased with the dimming of the glows.
"Thank you." Saria took deep calming breaths to get herself under control. She grinned at the man. "Am I the oddest case of headaches you've ever seen?" Her voice held only a hint of pain.
"Not so far." He smiled reassuringly, then busied himself around the room, mixing a few drops of one medicine with a few drops of another and mixing them both in some sweetwine. "You're still able to see and speak, when you can't do either, then you'll be amongst the worst."
He walked back to examination table and slipped an arm under the girls shoulders, "Sit up a little and take a few sips of this mixture, its a little more lavendar oil, mixed with meadowsweet. The taste should be masked by the wine; it shouldn't make you drowsy."
"Thank you." Saria sipped at the mixture and felt an almost immediate relief as the pressure left. "Oh thats much better."
"Well you should rest now, so lay back again." he rleased her shoulders back onto the table ensuring her head was well supported by the pillow. "Now, while you're laying their I'll just make some notes; we should see an improvement again in a few moments, as the draft begins to take effect."
Saria just nodded as the pain receeded into comforting bliss. "Can I have this to take home?" She hoped it would work when the voices where at their most persistant.
"I can give you a weak draft to take with you, but you mustn't take it more than twice a day. It won't make you drowsy, but the oils can make you ill if you take too much." Walking back to the counter, he decanted the oils into two small vials, and added some sweetwine to one, as a suspension.
"Now remember to shake this well before taking it, you will need to mix the oils into the wine again -
they'll rise when it is resting. And this vial, contains just the oils, _don't_ mix them up! This is for you to place a few drops onto a cool, damp cloth, like I have done for you today." he indicated the now body warmed cloth she still wore draped over her forehead.
Saria flipped the cloth over to the airborn side.
"Don't worry I know how to mix things, I am a baker after all." She grinned and was glad that she wasn't in as much pain anymore. "Can I sit up now?"
"If you do it slowly," he reached out a hand and helped her rise. "take it easy.." he said encouragingly.
Saria sat up slowly. She was so glad her headache was gone that she wished she could jump up and down, but thought better of it. "How long will this last?" she asked as she eyed the vials. "I have a hunch these will be a reacurring thing."
"Okay, now that you seem to have recovered a little, I need to ask a few questions." Walking back to the bench behind him, he collected writing materials.
"You say you have a feeling this will recur, why?"
"I don't know exactly. Just call it a hunch." Saria shrugged and winced when the movement sparked a stab of pain in her head.
"Have you had them before, of this intensity?"
"Its kind of like a never ending headache. It goes from bad to managable to head spliting. Like a flit that you let drink klah."
"That's an interesting way of putting it." Yardan laughed, "But its a good description. Look, if it happens again, anytime in the next fews days, dependingon the severity, either take the medicine I gave you - very carefully! Or, if it feels worse, or doesn't improve, either come back yourself, or have someone come and let us know, and we'll come to you.
Okay?"
"Thank you." The fact that people cared, even in this new place was touching. Even if it was their job.
"I'll make sure I do." She gathered up the solutions and turned to thank the healers hand. "Thank you... I never even got your name."
He stopped for a moment, and thought, "Well I guess that makes two of us, since I don't think I got your name either. I'm healer Yarden, and you are?"
"Saria, baker." She said with a grin. She could smile now that her head didn't hurt anymore. "and thank you again Yardan."
"You're very welcome, Saria, Baker." he smiled, "Just remember, if it happens again, take your medicine, dampen a cloth with some water and oils and lay down.
If its no better within a candlemark, send for a Healer. Right?"
"Right." Saria said with a small nod.
