Talrian smiled at Daigoro and raised the glass of wine he'd been given, admiring the color. "Thank you, Master Daigoro. I imagine that this is one of the perks of coming to the Vintner Hall... I'll never have to make do with inferior wine again, will I?"
"Well, as Hallsecond, I can assure you that none of the wine we make here is ever anything close to inferior." He grinned. "And if you think the vintage is good here, wait until you try the brew."
"I can't wait for a chance," Talrian replied, taking a sip of the wine.
"Though you'll have to promise to go easy on me. I'm not used to doing much drinking, and I'd hate to make a fool of myself before my daughter has even managed to unpack our cot."
"I certainly would not want to do that," the Hallsecond laughed. "Is your daughter your only family?"
"The only family with me," Talrian replied with a fond smile. "My oldest daughter is a greenrider. And my parents, uncle and sister are at the Healer Hall."
"How old is she?"
Talrian's smile turned a little worried. "Sixteen... and a handful, I tell you. Not that she'll be causing problems in the Hall, she knows better...
but sixteen is still sixteen." Taking another sip of his wine, Talrian raised an eyebrow. "Do you have any children?" Daigoro laughed. "Haven't even found a woman, yet."
"Yes, that is the important part," Talrian replied a little wistfully. "I found my wife when I was just sixteen, so I must have been one of the lucky ones." Now, a turn later, he could speak about her with fond remembrance instead of that terrible grief, but there were times that he thought he'd never recover from her loss. "Well, I can't complain," the Hallsecond shrugged. "I have lead a happy and full bachelor's life. I suppose soon that is something I should start thinking about. I'm certainly not getting younger," though the prospective brides whose father's continued to contact him sure seemed to be.
"I've noticed that peculiar trend myself." Talrian grinned. "Unfortunately, healers have yet to figure out a way to stop us from growing older. But before we get too off track, maybe you should tell me where I should start, here. It seems like it's been a while since you had a healer in residence." "Well, the healers at the Hold have been most helpful in that regard,"
Daigoro reassured him. "Perhaps you should speak to Dikero about specific cases and such. But when you are settled in, you should speak to our Journeyman Jio. Have you heard anything about him yet?"
Talrian opened his mouth and then paused, his eyes growing slightly wary. "I think so... is he the Vintner interested in the medicinal wines?" A cautious question, but Talrian didn't know enough about the Hallsecond to know if he was the type to feel kindly towards female weyrbred Master Healers. Vintner Hall didn't exactly have a reputation for looking kindly on that sort of thing, after all... "That's the one," the Hallsecond confirmed. "He has been itching to have a Healer close by to consult and bounce ideas off. I think the boy would love to have a sit down with you."
Talrian nodded. "Then I'll look forward to it. If there's anything else you need from me, just let me know. I'd like to get started as soon as possible." "Allow me to walk you down to the infirmary," Daigoro said with a friendly smile. He truly liked this new Healer of theirs and was looking forward to working with him.
