Frowning, R'alt leaned against the back wall, watching Isaline drape herself all over her sofa. There was something in her languid movements that was almost sensual. Like she was lost in that perfect, day-dreamy world of hers again. He recognized the moony look on her face. That annoyed him. And it annoyed him even more to realize that it certainly wasn't _him_ who was giving her the reason for the moony look. It stung his pride, as much as he hated to admit it. And on top of her ignoring him for a sharding _month_... Well, it wasn't good.
"How come I'm always the one who has to sharding find you, Isaline?" he finally asked quietly, trying to keep the growl from his tone.
Even though he'd been standing there for a while, Isaline jumped and let out a startled yelp. "Shards, when did you get in here? And don't you _knock_?!"
"Can't you _hear_?"
Isaline flushed angrily. "I was taking a nap!" It was _almost_ the same as daydreaming.
He snorted, pushing himself away from the wall. "If you're going to lie, at least make it a good one." Shards, he knew he was just egging her on, but he couldn't hold his tongue! He was just so sharding frustrated with her whole immature attitude.
She sank back into the couch and eyed him warily as he approached. "What do you care, anyway?"
"I don't." Folding his arms across his chest, he stopped walking once he reached the arm of the sofa.
"Then why are you being all loomy and grumpy?" she demanded. "It's disturbing!"
Sighing, he sat down. "You've been avoiding me, Isie."
It was pointless to try to deny it. "I was at first. But I'm not any more.
I just got really busy."
"Uh-huh." If she wanted to bed half the men in this Weyr, fine. Shards, he loved bedding half the sharding population of women here. He understood lust. Shards. He really needed to get his sharding pants out of its annoying twist.
She shifted to face him. "What? I _was_! I... I sort of met someone."
Obviously. He wasn't sharding stupid. "Mmmhmm. And does this someone have a name?"
Isaline's face drifted off into that dreamy expression again. "V'lorn."
R'alt stared at her, shocked. Out of all the scorched men in this place... "_V'lorn_?"
"You know him?" Isaline didn't like his expression. It would be just like him to try to ruin things!
"Know _of_ him. Shards, Isie, you don't want to get mixed up with that guy. He's bad news." _Very_ bad news.
"Bad news?" Isaline scoffed. "You don't know him, obviously. He's really sweet, R'alt!"
"Sweet?" He gave a sudden, sharp bark of laughter. Angry laughter. "All users are 'sweet,' Isaline. They're sweet when they're luring you into their trap, and when they have you completely..." R'alt shook his head.
"I'm surprised you haven't heard of his reputation, considering the circles you move in sometimes. I'm telling you, don't get involved."
The greenrider stiffened. "You don't know _everything_ R'alt. And you don't know _him_. He has been nothing but wonderful to me!"
"Of course he's being sharding 'wonderful' to you! He's a sharding user, Isaline! Or are your ears stopped up because it's _me_ who's telling you this, and not someone else, huh?"
"Why do you keep calling him that?" she demanded. "How is he _using_ me?
He's letting me enjoy myself! What's wrong with that?"
"He's gonna want something from you." He shook his head, jaw tightening.
"You're smarter than this, Isie. Think about it."
Isaline's cheeks flushed. "Is sleeping with me so terrible that a man has to _want_ something to endure it?"
R'alt glared down at her. "Stop that. You know that's not what I meant."
"So why is it so hard to believe that he might just like me?" she demanded, glaring right back at him. "You may not think I'm pretty, but other men do, you know!"
"Fine!" he snarled, rising to his feet. She was being sharding ridiculous! "You obviously don't want to hear it, so I'm just going to stop talking. Do what you want, Isaline. I wish you and V'lorn much sexual gratification because that's all you'll ever get out of that scorched bluerider."
Isaline was so flabbergasted by his anger that she simply stared at him with her mouth hanging open.
And that was how he left her as he turned on his heel and stalked out.
