Abrei

"Please just listen to what I have to say, and then I will leave you alone," M'galec blurted out as he slipped his foot in the door, hoping that wearing his heaviest pair of boots would absorb some of the blunt trauma in the very likely event that Abrei would decide to slam the door on it anyway.

She hadn't put much force behind her slam, so the door bounced back into her hand when she tried to close it. Sighing, Abrei glared at him. "What do you _want_, M'galec?"

"A couple things, actually." M'galec took the fact that all of his toes were not crushed as a positive sign. "May I speak with you...
inside?"

She studied him for a moment and then sighed again. "Fine. But I will knock your teeth in if you say so much as _one_ nasty thing to me, and the Weyrleader can yell at me for it if he wants. I am so sick of your attitude."

He was not going to get mad, no matter how she baited him. "Thank you."
Slipping into her weyr, he carefully closed the door behind him. "First of all, I have come to realize that you and I both have very different... points of view as far as what happened that night in your office so long ago. Obviously those view points conflict. You think I wronged you. I did not see it that way. But for whatever pain I caused you that night, I am sorry."

Whatever she'd been expecting, it hadn't been that. Abrei stared at him for a few moments with her mouth literally hanging open. Then she snapped it shut and gave him a confused look. "What brought that on?"

"I just have been doing a lot of thinking in the past few days." There really wasn't much else to do with his evenings except for hidework since Lenala kicked him so unceremoniously out of their weyr. "Anyway, I hope you can accept my apology."

"I..." She blinked again, not sure if she should be suspicious or not.
"Thank you, M'galec. That... was a kind thing to say."

"The other thing I came by to say was... Well, as it turns out I am not always right. In fact I was very wrong. About Lenala." No doubt she had heard. How could the whole Weyr not know after the shameful way her gold had carried on.

Abrei stared at him blankly. "I'm not sure what you mean. You got tired of her simpering and doing everything you told her to? That would be encouraging, I suppose."

He shook his head with a rueful smile. "She did not do everything I told her to. Quite the opposite, in fact. It was I who ended up catering to her every whim. And then she decided she was bored of my attentions and looked elsewhere. I should have listened to you, Abrei. She and I...
were not properly suited for each other."

That made Abrei feel uncomfortably like she was on the wrong side. "I didn't say she wasn't suited to you because I thought that she _should_
be catering to your every whim. I thought it was disgusting that you wanted a woman who would."

"That is not how it happened." Either in his intentions or in reality. "She was hurting after that flight went wrong. I thought... I could help her. I was foolish enough to think I could protect her from the darker side of life. I did not realize that she enjoys the seedier side. I never wanted her to cater to me. I wanted to help her. But you cannot help a woman like that."

Abrei shrugged uncomfortably. "I wouldn't really know. This sort of thing is not my area of expertise."

"But you _did_ know, Abrei. You did know, and I did not listen. And for that I am truly sorry. I value your opinion, though it seems you do not always understand that," or feel the same. She forced a laugh. "I wouldn't listen to my opinion on matters of romance, M'galec. I'm a disaster at them. That is possibly the only time I've ever been right."

"I think you sell yourself short, Abrei," he said with a small, wry smile. "Anyway, that was what I came to say. I am sorry, for everything."

Feeling like the entire conversation might not have actually happened, Abrei gave him a wary smile. "All right, M'galec. I accept your apology."

"Thank you," he nodded. It was a start at least. "I will leave you alone now. Please enjoy your evening."
