Description: Weyrwoman Traelyn interviews Ylisahn about a new job.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 20 of Turn 4
Ylisahn knocked on the door of the Weyrwoman's office and then as she waited for a response, took a moment to tug at the hem of her tunic, hoping that would pull some of the day's creases out of it.
"Come in!" Traelyn called, straightening the hides on her desk. As the door opened, she smiled, sitting up straighter in her chair. "You're Ylisahn?"
"Yes, Weyrwoman," Ylisahn agreed, thinking again how difficult it must have been for the woman to come in to the senior position at a Weyr she knew little about. Usually by the time a goldrider was the senior Weyrwoman she had had a long association with the Weyr, or more commonly had Impressed there.
Good. She was right on time. "Please, have a seat." Traelyn looked down at the hide in front of her--Mayla's resignation notice. "I understand that you've been a tremendous help to Mayla." She looked back up, studying the older woman in front of her thoughtfully. "No doubt you've heard that she is retiring?"
"We've all been doing out best to help out while the Headwoman's been ill," Ylisahn said fairly. "And I had heard something." She shrugged.
"Since I didn't hear it from Mayla herself it might have been a rumour." Certainly plenty had circulated.
The young Weyrwoman nodded. "She has stepped down and is going to be living with one of her daughters." The poor woman... Traelyn wondered why she hadn't retired sooner. Perhaps she should have intervened earlier--should have insisted that she step down... "Would you be willing to consider taking her place?"
Despite it being a possibility, and more likely because it was an interview with the Weyrwoman, Ylisahn still gulped in surprise. "Oh, yes. I would." She smiled widely. "Not to wish Mayla retired, but I would love to ..." A small moment of self-doubt intervened. Since the Weyrwoman didn't know her, perhaps she was making an unwise choice?
Then reason reasserted itself. This would be on Mayla's recommendation and the Headwoman - former Headwoman, now, she supposed - wouldn't have made the recommendation if she hadn't thought Ylisahn could both do the job and work with the Weyrwoman. "And I'm sure I could manage. Not as well as Mayla, to start with, perhaps."
"Mayla seems to think you're quite capable." Traelyn smiled. "And I trust her judgment."
"Well, thank you, Weyrwoman. I'd be honoured."
Traelyn stood and offered her hand to the new Headwoman. "Thank you, Ylisahn. I'm sure you and I will get many things accomplished together."
Ylisahn got to her feet and took the younger woman's hand. "I'm sure we will, too."
