N'kalen paused outside the door of I'lan's weyr. He'd come to ask a special favor of the other rider, but was now reconsidering. He had heard that I'lan had at one time been a baker's appy, and hopefully he could help him now. He knocked, and waited for an answer.

"Come!" called out the bronzerider as he held out a hand to silence his canine. At the sound of the knock, he'd got excited, barking to announce someone there.

N'kalen entered the weyr. "Greetings I'lan, my duty to your dragon."

"And mine to your blue," that was as long as the formality lasted. I'lan grabbed Bubbly, to stop him jumping up at the newcomer and ushered him in.

N'kalen laughed and reached down to pet the canine on the head. "I was told that once upon a time, you were a baker's appy."

"Senior Apprentice, yes," he confirmed.

"I was hoping you could give me instructions, or better yet, help me, come up with a special something that I can make for a special occasion. It'll have to be rather quick and easy, and I assure you, I have no talents with food. It only has to look fancy."

I'lan thought for a moment. "I can show you how to make a fancier version of bubbly pies, if that's any help."

N'kalen grinned. "Perfect. What will I need to do?"

"Well as well as berries, you'd need some of your favourite fruit to go in there as well. And when it comes to the pastry, that can be decorated in fancy shapes."

"Ok, that I can get. The pastry part is going to be the most difficult."

"I can show you, once you've got the hang of it it's really quite easy."

"The boy had better appreciate the work I am going to for him," N'kalen said with a grin. "I'm learning all sorts of new things."

"I hope he's worth it," grinned I'lan.

"I think he has the potential to be. It's still early...but I think he has great potential."

"Greenrider?" asked the young bronzerider.

"Actually, a bluerider."

"I see."

"We'll see what happens. Who can tell what the future holds?"

"Nobody can."
