"Good morning." Karri muttered sleepily as she sat down across from F'melar with a mug of hot klah and a sweet roll. "Do you mind the company?" F'melar blinked, but after a moment he recognized her. Sakime's friend
-she'd been over for dinner. "No. Are you usually up this early?" He asked with a frown. He didn't remember seeing her in the dining hall this early before... but he may have just overlooked her.
"Not if I can help it." she said as she tried to stifle a yawn. "Elliath had a conversation with some other dragon, then woke me up and wanted to know if she could have a firelizard! After that, it just didn't seem worth it to try and go back to sleep."
He chuckled. "I know the feeling. Sometimes dragons are like small children. You never know what they'll come up with next. But I think firelizards are worse." He added as Tabs snored softly in his ear. Affi was eyeing the bit of bread hanging limply in Tabs claws, and F'melar tossed Affi another crumb to avert a situation. "Little scamps."
Karri watched, fascinated at the small creatures antics. No one at her hold had a firelizard, and while she'd seen them at the gathers her father and brother had taken her to when she was young, they had always seemed too unattainable to actually imagine having. Now though, lots of people had one and she was starting to mirror her dragon's thoughts that it would be nice to have one. "Where did you get your firelizards? Have you had them long?" "Long enough. I'm from a seahold, and my uncle had a gold. He gave all of our family an egg when they turned ten. I got two, because I spent the most time with Sakime. My father thought I could keep one with me, and the other could watch her." He snapped his mouth shut with a scowl, his food gone sour at the reminder of those early days. His mother had been dead by then, but the memory of her had hung over her children like a stain that never washed out. It was no wonder that all his siblings had sought positions outside of the hold.
"You don't have a nice father either?" Karri asked as she watched his mood darken. "Not exactly." He grunted. Larres had never been cruel to his children, but then, he'd never been interested in them enough to be kind either. He was there to provide the stern discipline and father the next one.
Everything else was woman's work, and his mother had been an unpredictable nightmare. The day she'd thrown herself over the cliff, the entire hold had breathed a sigh of relief.
Karri watched the man for a few moments somewhat comforted that she wasn't alone in having a poor family life. "Sometimes I pretend it wasn't really me. I just imagine that it's somebody else who lived that life and I just read about it or something. It makes it easier..."
He shook his head. "I just try to forget." He said shortly. What else was he supposed to do with a mother that once tried to cook herself in an oven? "My mother was no picnic." If it weren't for his sisters...
The greenrider just reached out and patted F'melar's hand, sometimes a little human contact expressed what words could not. F'melar shook his head, denying the sympathy Karri was offering and trying to shake away some of the old frustration and anger that always rose when he thought of his mother. "It doesn't matter." He said harshly. "The weyr is enough. For both of us."
