The Measure of a Man

Writers: Bree, Devin
Date Posted: 2nd November 2006

Characters: Zanen, Miralani
Description: Miralani invites Zanen for a cup of klah and a nice chat, so she can get to know him a little better.
Location: Garnet Valley Hold
Date: month 13, day 12 of Turn 3

"Zanen, thank you for coming to see me." Miralani rose from her seat, giving the hunter a polite nod before gesturing to the chair she'd placed in front of the desk she was using. "Have a seat, please. Would you like some tea or klah?" "Thanks, Lady Miralani," Zanen said as he sat down. "Klah would be nice."

Miralani poured two mugs of klah and set one in front of him. "I just thought it would be nice for us to have a little talk and get to know each other."

"Sure, that sounds nice." He took a sip. "Anything in particular you'd like to know about me?"

"You're a hunter, aren't you?" Miralani asked easily as she settled down with her own mug of klah.

"Yes, ma'am," he answered. "I hunt nearly every kind of animal."

Miralani nodded. "And how did you get into that sort of work? It seems like it's hardly the common choice?"

Zanen smiled. "I started hunting with my canine when I was a boy, and took a liking to it. Hold life, or even farming didn't appeal to me, so I made my way hunting, tracking, fishing, just about anything useful that kept me outside."

"And you heard about our troubles, I take it?" Miralani would be more than happy to know that a confident hunter was after the felines--but she was more than a little wary about what sort of reward he might be expecting.

"Yep," the hunter nodded. "I thought I'd come by and see if I might be able to help you out." He took a sip of klah.

Miralani rewarded him with a warm smile. "It's very kind of you. I'm sure everyone will feel more comfortable with an experienced hunter here."

"Thank you. I just hope I can figure out what's going on and stop it." He was already starting to get that excited, antsy feeling, knowing there was a challenge out there, a problem to be solved.

"I hope you can as well," Miralani replied firmly. "Are you planning on staying with us after you take care of the problems?"

"Not really, Lady. I'm not saying your Hold isn't lovely, but I don't like to stay in one place too long."

"Well, that's a shame. I think you'd find it lovely here." Her smile turned a little teasing. "And surely the young ladies of the Hold will miss you if you leave so quickly! How exciting it will be for them to have a real hunter around!"

The corner of Zanen's mouth turned up. "Wouldn't want to disappoint them too much."

"As long as you disappoint them at least a little," Miralani replied with another teasing smile. "Well, Zanen... I dare say I'm pleased to have you here. If you need anything at all, please do let me know."

"I will, Lady Miralani. Thanks for meeting with me."

"Of course. Any time, Zanen."
