K'deren

B'ram leaned back on his elbows and closed his eyes, enjoying the warm of the sand and the sun on his skin. Shards, what a beautiful day!
Suddenly he felt a little body flop across his. Opening his eyes he found a tot drapped across his legs. "Well, hello there!"

The baby pushed herself into a sitting position, shoving a finger into her mouth and regarding the man with an unblinking gaze for a moment, before letting out a wail.

"Deralie?" called out her father as he caught up. He let go the hand of the little boy with him, and bent to pick her up.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to scare her," B'ram said, feeling guilty for unintentionally making her cry.

"It isn't you, she's not been walking long," explained K'deren. "She still gets a shock when she goes over like that."

"I didn't hurt her, did I?" He really knew very little about kids.

"She'll be fine." Indeed she was, back in the arms of her father, the crying had soon stopped. "See, she's all smiles now."

"Well, she's cute at least, even if she doesn't have much balance yet,"
B'ram smiled when the little girl grinned at him.

"Just like her mother, and his as well." K'deren pointed to the little boy who was sat playing in the sand by their feet now. "She's the image of Vonalie."

"Well, Vonalie must be quite a woman," the brownrider nodded.

"She was," stated K'deren.

"Mama's not here any more," said the little boy. "Her dragon went 'tween."

"Oh, I'm very sorry to hear that." **You're such an ass B'ram...**
"Really, I'm very sorry."

"It was _the_ accident in fall, earlier this turn." K'deren was slowly finding that he could talk about it now, that he had to for the sake of the children.

"I came right after," B'ram nodded. It seemed The Fall was never far from people's minds at the Weyr, even months after. "I came to help fill out the wings."

"They've started to settle down now, the sad thing is Deralie here will never know her mother except through the memories of other people."

"Yeah." Shards, what could he say to that? "At least she still has you."

"And her brother here."

"And how old are you?" B'ram asked the little boy, hoping to change the subject to something a bit more pleasant.

"I'm four!" said the lad. "I'm a big boy, my foster mother said so."

"Four? Really? Are you sure? I thought you were ten!" the brownrider exclaimed with surprise.

"I'm four," Trievan gave the man a big cheeky grin. "Deralie's one."

**This kid is cute!** "Well, you _are_ big then."

"Uh-huh, and when I get bigger, I'm going to ride a dragon like Mama did."

B'ram suppressed a laugh. "And like your father too?"

Trievan nodded.

K'deren smiled, it was the most the little one had opened up to anyone since his mother had gone.

B'ram decided this was kind of fun. "What color dragon do you think?
Do you like brown?"

He pursed his lips, thinking for a moment. "I like them all," he said eventually.

"I recommend brown," the brownrider smiled. "I have a brown."

"Is brown good?" he asked looking up at K'deren.

The brownrider laughed. "Of course it is, Brown is very good."

"Maybe even the best," B'ram assured the boy with a wink.

"That they are," agreed K'deren.
