"Thank you so much for seeing me, my Lord." Havontal bowed to Lord Benaroy before giving the old Holder a friendly smile. "And thank you for allowing me to rest before meeting with you. It was a long journey from Black Ridge Hold."
"Not at all," the Lord Holder waved the gratitude aside. "Your letter said you are looking for a member of your family that you believe to be here."
"My brother's widow," Havontal confirmed. "She was visiting Amethyst Cliff at the time of the earthquake, and I've come to see if she'd like to return home."
"Oh, by all means." It was strange that it had taken so long for her family to come to claim her. "May I ask what might have kept you this long from coming to find her?"
Havontal gave a self-deprecating smile. "I'd hoped to give her a little bit of space, my Lord. She is young and impulsive, and did not like her parent's decision to have her marry me and become Lady of Black Ridge again. I thought that allowing her some time under Lord Alalir's supervision might make her a little more willing to consider the benefits of our union."
"Ah. Gevina." Benaroy should have known.
"I see she has made her presence known," Havontal said, his voice sounding amused. "I do hope she hasn't been too much trouble."
Well, there were rumors... "Do you think she is ready to agree to your union now?"
"I don't know," he replied honestly. "But I've been patient as long as I can. I've set things in order at the Holding for now, but Gevina is going to have to grow up and accept her place."
"Well, if she's willing, my services will be at your disposal." Perhaps it was best to get her out of his Hold. She seemed to have her eye on more than one of his sons. Even the married ones...
Havontal had every intention of making sure Gevina was ready, one way or another. But there was no need to trouble Benaroy with such unpleasantness. "Thank you, my Lord."
