Abrei

Abrei

J'an was one of the few men who could get away with sitting next to Abrei on
her couch and wrapping a friendly arm around her shoulders. It wasn't that
she was all that close to him, though she counted him in the handful of
people she thought of as friends. It was the fact that he never made her
feel uncomfortable when he hugged her, and never made her feel like he was
expecting something more intimate.

"Thank you for coming to visit," Abrei said, letting herself relax enough to
rest her head on his shoulder. "I just wish I had better news about U'val."

"It was a shock," he replied. "I just imagined him going on forever." The
bluerider gave every appearance of being hale and hearty and more than
likely surpassing a hundred turns. The news had been sobering to say the
least.

"And maybe he will," Abrei forced herself to say. The fact that he'd gone an
entire day without regaining consciousness was making that seem less and
less likely, though. "He could wake up any time." **Or not at all.**

"I hope he does, and I hope he's okay with it." The thought of him
crippled.... "How's that grandson of his taking it?"

"He's worried, of course. But trying to stay hopeful." Abrei closed her eyes
and sighed. "I'm trying to stay hopeful, J'an. I really am."

"You can talk to me about it, anytime." He gave her a gentle squeeze,
"Anytime," he repeated. "I mean it."

"I know," she replied quietly, her eyes still closed. "I just... don't know
what to say. I'm starting to feel numb, J'an. I don't know if I can feel
anything anymore."

"It's been a lot to take in, for anyone, for all of us," he admitted. "Your
cousin, she had such potential, and now U'val..."

"And I'm not doing myself any favors," Abrei replied wryly. "I seem to make
very poor choices in my personal life."

"I don't think you're doing too badly. R'han was good for you for a fair
while."

"When he wasn't throwing me out of his weyr," she retorted. "Which seemed to
be an awful lot."

He held her closer for a moment, "You'll meet someone again."

"I don't know if I want to," she admitted after a short pause. "R'han...
isn't the only person I've seen recently. Just the most successful... which
really does say something."

"Well one day it'll happen, you really deserve it."

Abrei laughed a little shakily. "I don't think I want to get what I deserve.

It might not be a good thing..."

"I'm sure it will be good," he said comfortingly.

Although she didn't particularly agree, Abrei smiled anyway. "It's nice to
know you think so."

"Someone has to, and it made you smile at least."
