"Thank you for seeing me on such short notice Weyrwoman." Mosler said
as he forced a relaxed look and smile. He reminded himself that she was proving a point by having his son be searched, so now he had to back
down and play nice if he wanted to save his son... which he couldn't do if he was tense and frowning.
"Not at all, Hallmaster. Please, have a seat." Traelyn gestured to
the chair before her desk. Remembering that he couldn't drink anything but juice or water the last time he'd been in here, she'd brought out both pitchers of beverages for him to choose from. "Would you like anything to drink?"
He almost refused, after all this would only take a few minutes, but
then decided that it might set her off foot if he did, "Juice, please.
So kind of you to remember my preferences."
Smiling politely, she poured him a glass before sitting back in her
chair, resting her arms on the desk and assuming a more guarded expression. Traelyn was not one to forget how previous meetings in this room went, and she remembered their last meeting quite well indeed.
"What can I do for you today?"
"I just wanted to let you know that we've had a slight increase in apprentices the last few months to the Dolphin Hall," he explained diplomatically, "and with our future projections looking a bit better,
I'd like to extend an invitation for your searchriders to interview some of our _older_ apprentices who show an interest in becoming dragonriders."
A brow moved just slightly as she noted the emphasis he put on "older".
She wondered what age range he so conveniently put in that category,
and knew it probably wouldn't be a very diplomatic move if she decided to tell him that the Weyr would Search the Hall no matter what his own personal views were. Stepping down on her irritation, Traelyn inclined her head. "I'm certainly glad to hear that there have been more young people wanting to study the dolphin Craft, sir."
"Yes, some of them quite young in fact; my son for instance, Orlan is
only 12 turns." he agreed finding a way into the real subject. "All his life he's wanted to be a dolphineer."
"That desire must run in the family then," she smiled, getting a vague suspicion of where this conversation might be heading.
Mosler nodded, "There are quite a few in the family. It is a rewarding and worthy profession."
And now to the thick of it. "Speaking of... and I'm of course not
saying this was intentionally done," Which of course Mosler thought it was... "You recently sent one of your search dragons to my hall and while there, the rider informed my son that he could be a candidate."
He watched for her reaction, would she try to feign ignorance, or would she own up to her egotistical power bullying?
A brow rose in surprise. How interesting... "Did he?" she smiled.
"Congratulations. Does dragonriding run in the family as well?"
"No... it doesn't." he said more icily than he wanted it to come out.
How _dare_ she act surprised, when _she_ was the one to send the rider to his son!
Her expression hardened a little at his tone. "Is there a problem, Hallmaster?"
There she goes again! Acting like she knew nothing about the whole situation, after just a few months ago stating that she would search
the Hall whenever she wished! He stood up, unable to stay seated with the rage vibrating his whole body. "A problem?" he finally exploded,
"Your lying is a problem, your conniving is a problem, your egotistical show of power is a problem! How _dare_ you flaunt your position by telling one of our riders to search my son, and just to prove a point...!"
Traelyn rose and planted her hands on the desk, her eyes icy as she
stared directly at him, temper straining to break. With a forcible effort she held it back--well, most of it, anyway. "Sit _down_, if you would, Hallmaster," she said, tone too quiet, "and let's discuss this.
Calmly." Her jaw tightened as she slowly took her seat, and waited for him to do the same.
The Hallmaster held eyes with the Weyrwoman for several moments, his breathing quick and his pulse even quicker as he tried to tame his
fury. He knew he shouldn't have spoken in such a manner to the Weyrwoman, if she was going to try and take his son away from him over a disagreement months ago, he didn't want to imagine what she would do over this. His hands shook slightly from the adrenaline in his system as he took his seat.
Traelyn waited another moment, keeping her eyes trained on his face as
she slowly folded her hands together on the desk. "Now. I'm not quite
sure who gave you the idea that _I_ sent riders out to specifically Search your son, Hallmaster, but I want to get one thing straight: the dragons Search who they will."
His eyes bulged as he listened to her _again_ claim innocence. He
stood up again, no longer able to tame that ever increasing rage built up inside him. "The dragons may do the searching but _you_ control the dragons. Now you _tell_ your dragons to _un-search_ my son, or you will regret it!"
He felt a sharp, stabbing pain in his chest, and recognized it as
another attack of the heart like he had had before. He took a step towards the Weyrwoman and attempted to call out, but before he could the world around him went black.
