Cosani

"UUUUnnngh." Reyela flopped onto Cosani's bed and buried her face in her friend's pillow. "Just-- why did R'vkal have to be assigned to _my_ Wing?! It's not fair!"

"Who?"

"R'vkal." The greenrider's voice was muffled.

Cosani frowned thoughtfully. "Is that the guy you had that terrible date with?"

Reyela nodded. "Yes, before he Impressed. He's just so _awkward_. I never know what to do around Holders! Why do they even get to Impress?"

"Because some of us are lucky enough to be picked by a dragon," Cosani said with a raised eyebrow.

Reyela smacked Cosani's arm before she could dodge. "Come on! Holders are-- I get it, but also _why_?!"

"A lot of them are awful. _Holds_ are awful." Cosani made a thoughtful noise. "I suppose I don't blame them for getting out at the first opportunity."

"_I_ do," Reyela sat up and pushed her pale hair from her face. The Holds were their homes. If they were really so bad then they ought to stay and fix it. "I just wish he hadn't been assigned to my Wing. He came over to say hello today in the Dining Cavern and actually asked me if Brandith went into heat, like she was a-- a canine!"

Cosani gasped. "_No!_"

"I know! It's like he's never seen a dragon before, and he _rides_ one! One of these days Indrath is going to win a greenflight and I swear, I will send flowers to whoever that poor rider is."

Cosani made a face. "I sure hope he doesn't catch Shalith. I don't need to be chasing off any stupid bronzerider boys. I bet he's terrible at sex, too."

That gave Reyela pause, and it wasn't because she suddenly remembered what he looked like stripped down to his swim things. "Well... he was engaged before. So maybe. Either way, I don't care," she said irritably. "He got mad at _me_ because Brandith ate a pony the other day. Dragons eat beasts. They just _do_ and it doesn't matter how we feel about it." She'd rather pull a tooth out by hand than admit that R'vkal was right and that runners _were_ for riding, not eating.

"If it's in the beast pens, it's dragon food," Cosani agreed. "Does he get fussy about what his dragon eats? Sheesh."

"I just... I don't understand him." Reyela toyed with the blanket's fringe, running the threads through her fingers like it was grass. "He's had a hard time at the Holds, I think, but he seems unhappy here. I don't know why he decided to Stand."

Cosani frowned. "You don't _like_ him, do you?"

Reyela leveled a glare at Cosani that could peel the hide off a wherry. "Why would you even ask me that."

The other greenrider looked back with a raised eyebrow. "Cause you seem to be spending a lot of time thinking about him."

"Because he's a-- a hangnail of a person!"

"Mm-hmm," Cosani said skeptically. She laid back with her hands tucked behind her head. "'Oh he's so annoying. He's the worst, blah, blah.' I've heard people talk like that before. Some of them are weyrmated now."

Reyela wrinkled her nose. "Ew. I can dislike someone and not want to jump their bones."

"It's not about disliking him, it's about _how_ you dislike him." Cosani waved a hand. "Like you can't stop thinking about him."

"You read too much smut," Reyela shot back. "Or-- oh no. Oh _no_. Cosani-- are you a _romantic_?!"

Cosani rolled her eyes. "No. I've just seen this play out a few times. It's gross."

Reyela's grin grew sly. "What was it you said? You seem to spend a lot of time thinking about this..."

"Oh please. You can tease me when I can't stop talking about how annoying some boy is," Cosani said.

"I can tease you whenever I want," Reyela shot back. "Like right now, you starry-eyed softie. Or should I go so that you can sign into your pillow and draw hearts all over the margins of your books?"

Cosani turned on her side and gave Reyela a cool look. "You're just trying to distract me from your gross crush on R'vkal."

"You're trying to hide your soft underbelly." Reyela winked. "I could do this all night. _Or_ we could call a truce, go find some beer, and see if anyone's having a fire in the Weyrbowl tonight?"

"Beer sounds great," Cosani said. "And we should find out whatever Northern Weyr is having a Hatching next so we can go bang some hot guys we'll never see again."

"Oh yes please." It sounded deliciously uncomplicated, and like a perfect plan.
