They Can't Take That Away

Writers: Aaron, Steel
Date Posted: 16th April 2026

Characters: L'leb, T'thalin
Description: It’s moving day for the junior weyrlings.
Location: Barrier Lake Weyr
Date: month 1, day 3 of Turn 13
Notes: Mentioned: Rath (Aydhara), E'shren, D'ltero

}:I see you've chosen a weyr,:{ said Aurelth to Roxarith. }:I hope you don’t mind, but I’ve made my home on the ledge beside yours.:{

}:Of course not.:{ Roxarith said, and arched his neck proudly. }:Mine has chosen an excellent view for our weyr, and the afternoon sun on my ledge shall be very pleasant.:{

}:You’ll have to let me join you sometime for a bit of that sun,:{ said Aurelth, as though the sun would not shine just the same on his own ledge.

}:I do not _have_ to do anything, except in lessons.:{ Roxarith asserted calmly. }:But perhaps on occasion. You are my clutchmate, after all, and much more pleasant than Rath.:{

He paused, then added, }:Mine likes that we have a home all our own now.:{

}:Oh, everyone’s more pleasant than Rath.:{ Aurelth would forget he said that next time he spoke to Rath, of course. }:But nobody can take our homes now.:{

Roxarith considered this, then settled more comfortably on his ledge.

_His_ ledge, all his own. A home, for his rider.

}:We are home.:{ the bronze agreed, simple and certain, spreading his wings as if to emphasize the moment, before folding them again.

}:We are growing quickly.:{ he added. }:Soon we will know all there is to know.:{

}:Oh, I already do.:{ Aurelth was well aware that he did not, but it was more fun to say he did.

}:You do not know more than me.:{ Roxarith asserted simply. He then refused to elaborate, and only yawned.

}:Of course,:{ Aurelth conceded, though his tone made it clear he was merely humoring Roxarith.

Roxarith needed no further hinting to shift to ignoring the smaller brown. His rider was happy, and so Roxarith was contented and pleased too.

}:L’leb is bringing a bottle of wine to meet your rider,:{ said Aurelth.

**What? I didn't say that!** L’leb objected.

}:Well, you have to now. I know you have one.:{

**Well… who are you talking to, and what did they say?**

}:I’ll tell you in a minute.:{

}:Are our riders allowed to drink?:{ Roxarith countered, opening one faceted eye to regard Aurelth.

A beat.

}:I have told Mine that yours is coming.:{

}:Perhaps they are not,:{ Aurelth agreed. To L’leb, he said, }:You were right. The wine from your brother is something we should keep for when you are allowed. I suppose you will have to settle for… tea.:{

**Nobody was supposed to know about the wine! Leloede didn't know it wasn't allowed yet!**

}:Yes, well. Now only you, he, and T’thalin know about it.:{

**Flame it, Aurelth…**

L’leb hurried to T’thalin’s door and knocked.

T'thalin opened the door. “L'leb.” He greeted. “... Hi. I, um, wasn't expecting visitors.”

“Hey. Sorry. Um. Do you need help getting unpacked?” asked L’leb. “Aurelth kind of just. Sent me over.”

“I… don't have much.” T'thalin admitted, but took a step back. “I'm all done, actually, but… you can come in? If you want to?”

“Oh, sure. Thanks.” L’leb smiled. “I’m done, too, so maybe I can show you my new place after I see yours!”

“Sure.” T'thalin responded.

Maybe he'd go see E’shren and D'ltero, after.

“Er… Roxarith didn't mention anything about wine, did he?” L’leb wondered.

T'thalin blinked. “Roxarith said something about not drinking.” He offered. “I don't have, um, any wine. And I don't think it's… a good idea.”

“No, it isn't!” L’leb agreed. “I just wanted to make sure Aurelth didn't promise you we would do anything we shouldn't. No wine until we're allowed.”

T'thalin nodded once more. “So… um. This is my weyr.” He offered.

“Ah, yeah… They all pretty much look the same without a bunch of stuff in them, don't they?” asked L’leb. “Makes me miss my room back at the Hold. After Leloede moved out, and I had it all to myself.”

“I don't know… I kind of like having my own space.” T'thalin responded. “It's _mine_. Mine and Roxarith’s. No one can take it away from us.”

“Yeah, that is nice, isn't it?” L’leb smiled. “Well, here, come see mine!”
