Perhaps lurking was beneath the Weyrwoman, but Thiseta was still new to her knots. So, after Threadfall was over and she'd tended to Imbeth, she decided to spend the afternoon _lurking_. Idling. Waiting until the weyrlings were done with their lectures with J'nic for the day before asking Imbeth to summon the pair.
Imbeth passed along the message from her perch at the Star Stones where she could oversee the entire Weyr. }:Your rider will meet mine outside your barracks,:{ she told Saejith. }:Do not make her wait.:{
}:She would never!:{ Saejith's response was immediate, and a little offended.
In fact, it was only a minute or two before Cirina came running out of the barracks, still pulling a clean shirt straight as she ran up, "Weyrwoman, I'm sorry to keep you waiting. Ma'am. What can I do for you?"
"I wasn't waiting." She turned her mind to Imbeth. **Did you tell them I was waiting?**
}:I did, because you _were_,:{ Imbeth replied.
Thiseta suppressed a sigh. No wonder Cirina looked worried. "Imbeth was perhaps a little more... ah, direct, in her invitation than I meant. I just wanted to meet you and take the time to welcome you properly to Barrier Lake. How are you and Saejith settling in?"
"Oh, well... dragons can be very literal?" Cirina's smile was a little too wide, clearly trying to be agreeable. "Well, um, hi. I'm sure you know I'm Cirina. My mother is greenrider Ciara, and my father brownrider R'yin." Pointing out she was weyrbred was deliberate; she didn't want the Weyrwoman thinking she was some confused lost holder who'd Impressed from the Stands. "Thank you for the welcome, everyone has been very helpful. They even made sure I got my things," she gave the hem of her shirt one more tug. It had been a relief when someone brought over her clothes and personal effects. "It's uh... nice here."
It wouldn't do to tell the Weyrwoman that she kept getting lost, the food was weird, and the lake smelled like green. "And Saejith is just... he's perfect. He really is. Do... do you want to meet him too?" A blue-grey nose was poking out of the barracks doorway. He thought he was hiding.
"Of course! I would love to!"
Saejith trotted out of the barracks and over to the weyrwoman, sitting down politely in front of her. "He's just the absolute best dragon ever," Cirina gushed with the smitten tone of the newly-Impressed.
Thiseta nodded politely to the little dragon. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Saejith. You chose your rider well."
}:Tell her of course I did.:{
**I will not,** Cirina protested, aghast.
Saejith sighed, and then said, }:Of course I did. She was the best. The ones on the Sands didn't know what they were doing.:{
Cirina was still getting used to things, but that had that kind of 'louder' tone that she was sure meant he'd included Thiseta in that. The redheaded teen's eyes went wide with horror.
So did Thiseta's-- but for an entirely different reason. "Oh my!" She laughed merrily and reached out to scritch Saejith's eye ridges. "I can't remember the last time another dragon spoke to me! Thank you for the honour, Saejith! And I agree, Cirina _is_ perfect for you. I will enjoy getting to know you both better."
}:She is _my_ rider,:{ Imbeth grumbled from her perch on the cliffside.
Saejith preened under the praise, and the scritch, though when next he spoke, he directed it at Imbeth, }:Well mine wouldn't say it. It was very important,:{ he was full of baby indignity.
"Pleeeeeease don't tell the weyrlingmasters he doesn't have any manners. We're working on it, I promise," Cirina said.
"It's fine, it's an honour!" Thiseta was still beaming as she turned to Cirina. "And he'll learn. He's just a baby,"
}:He should know better now,:{ Imbeth growled.
**Oh hush,** Thisteta told her. **Other dragons _never_ speak to me, and I like it when they do.**
}:You should only like talking to _me_.:{ Imbeth's mindvoice was tart as a citron.
Thiseta suppressed a smile. "And I like talking to other dragons. It's so rare that they feel like talking to anyone but their own rider."
"He was upset I wouldn't say it. He thought it was important." Cirina rolled her eyes, "He's only a few days old. He doesn't really understand what 'important' means yet."
Saejith did not seem bothered by the slander, insisting, }:It was important.:{
"But, uh, thank you for not being upset. And apologize to Imbeth for his manners. Everyone here has been so nice even though I swooped in and stole one of your hatchlings; I don't want to cause any more fuss or trouble," Cirina said earnestly.
"You didn't 'steal' Saejith. He was meant for you," Thiseta said gently. She lay a hand on the tiny blue's head. "And perhaps, and just as importantly, you're meant to be _here_, and not at Dolphin Cove Weyr."
Cirina tried, but couldn't keep the frown off her face, "But I like Dolphin Cove Weyr; it's my home. I already had to move once when River Bluff, y'know. I didn't want to move again. Saejith keeps saying I'll like it here, but he doesn't know. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that." She looked embarrassed.
Without taking his head out from under Thiseta's hand, the little blue wrapped his tail around his rider's legs.
Thiseta kept scritching Saejith's eyeridges. "I'm glad you did. I didn't know you were from River Bluff. I'm sorry."
Shaking her head slightly, Cirina said, "No, it's fine, I just... I hadn't planned to move. Again. But this will be fine. Maybe Saejith is right," she sounded both hopeful and doubtful somehow. "Don't worry, we'll be good students," she gave the Weyrwoman her most winning smile. "You won't regret having us."
She was so eager for approval. Thiseta smiled down at the little blue dragon. "I know I won't. We're happy to have you with us for as long as you wish to stay. I know that Barrier Lake doesn't have the history or fine weather that Dolphin Cove does, but it grows on you. It grew on me."
"Maybe. The baths are pretty nice," Cirina granted. "Was there anything else I could help you with, Weyrwoman? I'm sure you have important things to get up to."
"I just wanted to meet you and Saejith, that's all." Reluctantly she pulled her hands from Saejith's smooth, soft hide and stuck them in her pockets. "Thank you for meeting with me. And welcome to Barrier Lake."
"Well, thank you! You didn't have to take the time. And everyone HAS been very welcoming." Saejith sighed, dramatically, when Thiseta stopped scritching, but then the sigh turned into a wide yawn. "Whoops, I should get him in before he decides it's naptime out here. It was nice meeting you, ma'am."
"It was nice to meet you as well." Thiseta waved at the pair of them as the weyrling and her dragon retreated to the safety of the weyrling barracks. Both Cirina and Aydhara were the daughters of dragonriders but dragonriders' kin tended to Impress more often than Holders anyway. Thiseta felt no more enlightened than she'd been before.
**I hope she stays,** she thought. With any luck, she'd find something worth staying for.
