Description: S'ros checks in on Cirina after taking note of her habits when taking care of Saejith.
Location: Barrier Lake Weyr
Date: month 1, day 20 of Turn 13
S'ros was beginning to notice a pattern. Cirina had been sleeping, every night he had seen her, with Saejith. And he could swear the young blue was just about constantly shiny with oil. It was good to keep his hide supple while he grew so quickly, of course, but at some point, a hide was as oily as it could get. Between all the time she was taking to keep him well lubricated and sleeping cuddled up with him, she was risking a moderate to severe case of the frazzles.
"Cirina?" S'ros flashed his charming smile. "Do you have a minute to talk?"
Predictably, Cirina was sitting with Saejith, a book open in her lap as she leaned against his side in the afternoon sun. "Er, sure." Scrambling to her feet, she said, "What do you need, weyrlingmaster?"
It still felt strange to S'ros to be addressed as such.
"I'm not sure there's a way to phrase this without sounding weird. But I've noticed you've been spending a lot of extra time oiling Saejith. And every time I've been on overnight shift, you've been sleeping with Saejith and not in your bed. It's good to be... hm, fastidious about keeping him oiled, and it's good to strengthen your bond.
Now, I'm a little, ah, concerned that between spending extra time going over and above what's necessary and not sleeping in your bed, you might not be getting as much quality rest as you need. And that can lead to the frazzles." Frazzles could come back to bite you.
"What are the frazzles?" Cirina looked immediately alarmed and glanced back towards Saejith, "The healers said he was healthy! D'boran made us check in three weeks in a row because of his color, but he said he's fine! He's just not the prettiest, but he's healthy!"
"Oh, I'm not worried about Saejith at all," said S'ros. "The frazzles are for you. That's the sort of thing when your reaction time is hosed because you're falling asleep on your feet, eh? You need to be at your best during training."
"I'm doing fine," Cirina said, defensively. "And it's not like I have all that much to do with my time off. I only know a couple of people here, and I can't follow Aydhara around ALL the time. Besides, Saejith likes the attention."
"Yeah. Well. Maybe I can help you make some more friends," S'ros suggested.
"Oh, that's, that's nice of you," Cirina's expression implied she was actually a little horrified at the suggestion. "No, really, I'm fine. I have lots of friends, I just can't visit them until Saejith is bigger and I have more time."
S'ros knew that look from his own kids. He was going to have to figure out some -- groan -- oblique, indirect way to deal with this. He hated to have to -- ugh -- ask someone else how to help.
"Yeah. I get you. We left behind my youngest's mom when we came here. She didn't want to come, and he can't visit her on his own until he Impresses."
"Oh, that's so sad for him. At least I've managed the hard part at least," Cirina pointed out brightly, "Now I just have to wait for Saejith to get big. But that'll happen before I know it, right?"
"It really will. Hey, since you've got the hard part managed, do you think you might give Daslim some advice on how you dealt with it?" S'ros smiled his best canine pup smile. (It was a pretty good one.)
Cirina was silent for a long moment, worry and indecision clear in her expression before she finally, hesitantly, said, "If it's alright with you, sir, I really just want to focus on myself, Saejith, and our training. You said that was important, right? I'm not planning on staying after I graduate. I don't need to make friends I'm just going to leave. And before you suggest I talk to your son, you should know that I definitely picked my mother when my father decided he was moving without the whole family wanting to."
Well, now he had stepped in it. He could give all the explanations he wanted about how little of a parent Daslim's mother had been before they moved, and how Daslim had chosen to come with them, this, that, and the other, and it would not matter. This was not the solution he hoped it might have been. The best he could do now was move on.
"I'm glad you had a mother worth picking. Listen, I won't keep taking up your time, but I want you to know, there is such a thing as too much oil, and you would get better sleep in your bunk. Let me know if there's anything I can help you with."
Solemnly, Cirina said, "I promise to watch the oil. He just gets dull so much faster than the others. But the healers said something, too. He was slippery at his last checkup." That part was all true, but the, "I'll definitely come to you if I need anything," was a lie. She didn't even bother to lie about sleeping in her bunk. They'd have their own weyrs soon enough, and then it would be too cold to snuggle Saejith out on his ledge.
Even S'ros was not innocent enough to think she was telling him the truth, but if she was to the point of saying whatever he wanted to hear to get him out of her hair, he had definitely better get out of her hair.
"You're doing great. I'll see you in class."
"Thank you, sir. We'll be there!" Cirina chirped before fleeing back to the safety of Saejith.
