Ç'pier sighed when Yuliuth relayed another summons from Loseth, but he hurried to the Weyrleader's office.

"Yes, sir?"

"How's the investigation going?" N'vanik asked with a slight edge of irritation.

"Investigation...?" Ç'pier had so fully put out of his mind the expectation that he find the perpetrators of the egg scam, it did not even occur to him at first what N'vanik was asking about. At first. "Oh, right. That investigation. Yeah. I haven't found anything."

The Weyrleader frowned, his irritation rising. "And why is that?"

Ç'pier had a feeling N'vanik was not going to be happy if he said, 'because I haven't been looking.'

"Because I haven't been looking."

Oh well.

"Oh?" Part of N'vanik enjoyed the chance to get angry at him for something. "So you don't care at all about your reputation? Or the Weyr's reputation? You think you can ignore your Weyrleader when he tells you to do something?

"My reputation is a bit of a moot point, isn't it? Look, I'm not ignoring you. It's just been a matter of priorities. I have a lot on my plate, and I haven't had the time yet," Ç'pier answered.

"Then _make_ time. This isn't a game. If I tell you to do something you _do_ it!" Did C'pier think he would forget?

Ç'pier could hardly believe this was so important to N'vanik. It was not as though the Weyr would miss the fourteen marks. But maybe it was more about the principle. The obedience was what mattered to him. Perhaps he was more like Ç'pier's erstwhile master than he originally believed.

"Understood, sir."

The Weyrleader glared at him a moment longer. The kid had been dragging his feet this long and now he was making excuses, so who's to say he wouldn't keep doing that? "So what are you going to do? What's the plan?"

What did this man expect Ç'pier to do? He was one man with no resources and no connections. He had burned every bridge he ever built. He might even ask N'vanik for help if he thought he would give it.

"Are you asking me to do this because you know I can't, and you want to punish me for failing because you couldn't punish me for stealing that man's marks?"

"I want you. To find out. Who did it," N'vanik ground out. "And since your name got dragged into it, you get to figure it out. If they think they can get away with it, they're gonna do it again. So get me. Their names." He was growing more and more tempted to just punish C'pier anyway.

So, Ç'pier thought, that was a yes. No one was going to help him. No one was going to tell him the truth about what they knew, even if they did know something. He might as well have simply agreed to repay the man his marks. But there was no value in saying any of this.

"Yes, sir."

"That's not an answer!" N'vanik grit his teeth and muttered, "Feckin' useless."

}:Don't be mad at Yuliuth's rider,:{ Loseth said. }:He didn't do that thing.:{

N'vanik shook his head. "Are you incapable of doing anything but moping around like we should feel sorry for you?"

"Is that all I've done?" Ç'pier had been well compensated -- and Saedyna by extension -- for someone who had been doing nothing but moping. "Set a deadline, and either I'll manage it, or I won't."

N'vanik almost told him "tomorrow", but the kid would just pout more about being set up to fail. "Next sevenday. I want you to report what you've done to start looking."

"I'll have a report for you on the first day," said Ç'pier.

"You'd better."

Ç'pier grinned and bowed dramatically.
