Today was the day! Today they were going hunting! Firelizard egg hunting! It was going to be great! Maybe they would find a gold egg! Wouldn’t that be great?!
But what would O’dyn do with a gold egg? Would he keep it? Sell it? No, selling it seemed wrong. Maybe he could give it to a friend who didn’t have a dragon. That would be an _awesome_ gift. Oh! His mother would _love_ a firelizard! Yes! That’s what he would do! He would find a gold egg and give it to his mother!
“Is V’tian ready?” O’dyn eagerly asked of Genireth as he quickly strapped his dragon up.
}:Mine says we are ready, and waiting for you.:{ Indith responded, and passed Genireth the image her rider gave her.
“Let’s go!” O’dyn shouted as Genireth leaped forward. This was going to be great!
They reappeared over a beach that stretched to the horizon with cliffs bordering some of the shoreline. To O’dyn, it seemed like a perfect place to search for eggs! “Is this it? Where do we start?” he asked as the dragons landed.
“Stay above the tideline.” V’tian responded as he slid off Indith’s back and surveyed the coastline. “We'll be looking for upturned mounds of sand, or slight depressions. We can start on this side and sweep that way.”
He fully intended to hang back and watch, though Sky took flight with a whistle, spiraling upward.
Radiance settled on her shoulder perch and let out a trilling call. V’tian stroked her neck.
“If there’s any wild flits, Radiance will warn them off.” V’tian added.
“Warn them off? Like warn them that we’re coming? Won’t they hide the eggs then?” O’dyn asked.
“I _mean_, if there’s an angry wild flit, Radiance can make them go away.” V’tian responded. “She's a gold.”
O’dyn’s eyes widened. “She can just order any other firelizard around?”
“She can.” V'tian assured. “She bosses Sky around. And golds are always the boss.”
He studied the area again. “... Start that way?”
The littlest bluerider eagerly set out in that direction. “Here?” he suggested, without really waiting for confirmation, as he pointed at what looked like a very natural depression. He struck into the sand. “Oh, maybe not here,” he said after a moment. He scanned along the line. “There? There looks good!”
“Good idea.” V'tian advised. “I'll stand watch with Radiance and Sky. From… over there.” He nodded toward a shady spot.
Radiance chirruped, seeming to agree.
“You’re not going to help?” O’dyn asked even as he started digging.
“I _have_ two firelizards.” V'tian pointed out, then huffed a sigh. “Fine. I'll… help. But you owe me.”
He moved to start idly digging.
O’dyn was oblivious to the fact that V’tian wasn’t digging nearly as effectively or with even the same degree of interest as O’dyn was. He was just so excited to be searching! His young head kept coming up with all sorts of awesome discoveries for the day. They’d find a gold’s nest -- no, _two_ golds’ nests! -- with lots of eggs to share around and maybe sell one or two for their efforts because they had worked hard at finding them, right? They deserved a few marks for their efforts and it felt like he wasn’t asking for-
O’dyn’s shovel hit something that was definitely _not_ sand.
“V’tian! V’tian, I found something!” the littlest bluerider cried as he tossed his shovel aside and began digging with his hands.
“Ohyeah?” V'tian got up, and sauntered over.
His hands hit something hard, slid down a curved side. O’dyn let out a sharp cry of preemptive triumph as he cupped the object -- it was an egg! It had to be an egg! He had found one! --, withdrew it from the sands, and held…
A rock.
V'tian couldn't help it. He laughed. “Well… it's _something_.” He huffed. “You could paint it.” He added. On his shoulder, Radiance spread her gleaming wings and let out another trilling call before taking wing as well to join Sky.
O’dyn was obviously crestfallen. It was supposed to be an egg, not a stupid rock! He dejectedly tossed it away. He was supposed to find a clutch! A big clutch! Something he could bring back!
“Let’s go look somewhere else,” he muttered, though if he dug up another rock, he was going to be done.
They didn’t find any eggs. Only more rocks.
