Cleaning Quest

Writers: Aaron, Steel
Date Posted: 19th October 2025

Characters: H'yazi, L'tos
Description: H’yazi and L’tos are paired together for chores.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 11, day 2 of Turn 12

The cleaning never ended. It seemed by the time they had finished getting things tidy and kempt, they were already messy and dirty again.

Clean, clean, clean. Wash, wash, wash. Morning, noon, and night.

“Does anybody know where the broom went?” asked H’yazi.

“I have a… mop.” L'tos said, and lifted it, gave a little shake. “... Does that work?”

Hallisenth gave a draconic yawn. }:They're both sticks with things attached.:{ She noted.

L'tos winced. “... So are shovels.” He responded.

Hmm, sweeping and mopping in one swell foop… That was hard to pass up, especially if someone was already using the broom.

“I’ll take it.” Of course, he was not considering the fact that he was about to make a muddy mess.

L'tos handed it over, but then paused to consider. “... Maybe we should actually go look for a broom. What are you-- Oh, yeah. For a dust pile like that, definitely a broom.”

“... Yeah?” H’yazi looked left and right. He should know how to do this. He had done it enough times. Then again, he had never lived anywhere that got quite this dirty in the sleeping quarters before.

Hayarall and Liazi had a rule about wearing shoes inside.

“You’re sure?”

“I don't want to get in trouble, and baby dragons make a _mess_.” L'tos stated.

}:Hey!:{ Hallisenth protested.

“... Sorry, Halli.” L'tos muttered. “... You're amazing. Anyway, come on, H'yazi. We'll find a broom.”

“N-no, I don't want to make trouble, either!” H’yazi wibbled. “I’ll help! We can find a broom together, right?”

“That's the plan.” L'tos squared his shoulders. “Come on. I think Hallisenth is going back to her nap so she'll be okay.”

H’yazi smiled with relief. He had not ruined anything, not yet. And L’tos was willing to help.

“There has to be one around here somewhere…”

“Exactly. So come _on_.” L'tos responded. “The sooner we find one, the faster you can get your dust pile done and we can see what needs to be done next.” He added. “Probably mopping.”

“Oh! Right!” H’yazi bounded to L’tos”s side.

“This way.” L'tos decided, and set off in search of said broom. There was a closet nearby, he remembered seeing it.

“Oh! Well, I. I already looked in the closet,” said H’yazi as they approached it. “That's why I was asking if someone else had it. Maybe someone forgot to put it back?”

“Well that's not right.” L'tos frowned. “One should always put things back where they're found. But if it's not there, we'll just have to search it out.” He gave a firm nod.

“Maybe whoever is using it just didn't hear me…” H’yazi suggested. It would not be the first time someone had ignored him.

“Maybe.” L'tos frowned again. “But there should be more than one broom. And I'm _not_ going to leave work undone. Come on. We'll _find_ a broom.”

H’yazi followed L’tos on down the line of wallows, but nobody was hoarding an extra broom.

Finding nothing, L'tos checked the _other_ supply closet he knew of.

Aha! A broom!

“Here.” He said, and held it out to H'yazi. “I _told_ you we'd find one.”

“I should have checked here, too… I didn't realize there were two closets.” H’yazi blushed as he took the broom. “Sorry. Thanks for helping. And for stopping me from making a mess.”

“A mess _now_ would reflect poorly on all of us.” L'tos responded immediately. “Besides. I need the broom too. So I'll trade you the mop for it when we're done.”

“Oh. R-right.” It was silly to think that maybe there would be some sort of… class solidarity here. H’yazi was still every bit as much an outsider as he had been before. L’tos was just looking out for himself. Maybe Weyrfolk were really not that different from Holdlessfolk after all. “I’ll be quick about it.”

“Don't be quick.” L'tos responded. “Be _thorough_.” A pause, and then he added, “At least, that's… my opinion. Do… you need help with anything more?”

“Right! N-no, that's everything!” H’yazi gave a quick nod and a bow. “I'll get it done right!”

“I still have the mop.” L'tos pointed out. “I'll go get it, and the bucket, and meet you back where we started. We can trade then.”

“Deal.”
