N'vanik tried to greet as many of the new pairs as he could, and he made his way around to one of the younger weyrlings who'd Impressed. "Congratulations, brownrider."
Palixan startled, briefly, then glanced up from where he'd been gazing at Kovashoth, eyes still wide. "Sir!" He blurted, and offered a salute. "... Thank you, sir."
Kovashoth stretched his neck forward. Sniffed. }:He smells of Authority.:{
Palixan-- no, he was P'xan now, wasn't he?-- swallowed. "Authority doesn't... _have_ a smell, Kovashoth."
}:Yes it does.:{ The brown hatchling declared, and sat back, pleased.
"Authority?" the Weyrleader asked.
P'xan's ears reddened. "He says you smell like Authority, sir." He blurted.
Kovashoth stretched out his neck again, and then got back up, doing a full stretch and a mighty yawn. }:He is important. So we must make a good impression.:{
The Weyrleader laughed. "That's a new one." He bent down and offered a hand to the little brown. "Hello, Kovashoth."
Kovashoth sniffed it, once, like a canine might. And then nudged the offered hand.
P'xan flushed more. "He says hello. And... that he's happy to be here. Even if he's not sure where else he'd be."
N'vanik smiled warmly at the hatchling and rubbed gently at his headknobs. "I"m happy you're here, too." Then he asked P'xan. "Do you have family visiting?"
"My oldest brother and his wife are here." P'xan responded, and patted Kovashoth's neck when the hatchling trotted back to him. "They already met Kovashoth, sir."
The little brown wiggles in delight.
"That's good. They must be very proud," N'vanik said.
"They are, sir. Thank you, Weyrleader." P'xan added, and straightened further. "Kovashoth is so magnificent, already."
The little brown mirrored him, puffed up slightly and arched his neck with pride.
"We look forward to flying for the Weyr someday soon." P'xan added.
N'vanik studied the boy. "How old are you?"
P'xan straightened further, and his eyes went wide. Had he said something wrong? He'd have to fix that, but how? "I'm fourteen Turns, sir!" he responded, and offered a salute he'd seen a rider give.
Kovashoth nudged at His. }:Why do you feel all twisty? You are Mine, and we have done nothing wrong.:{ the little brown asked.
P'xan's attention went to his brown immediately. "No, it's okay, Kovashoth. You're all right."
"Didn't mean to worry you," the Weyrleader said. "You're too young for the Wings, so it's going to be a little while before you join us up there."
P'xan nodded, once more, if slowly. "I understand, sir." He responded carefully. "I'm still going to do my best. And I'll make sure Kovashoth and I do our parts."
"It might be frustrating to be left behind, but take advantage of the extra time to train. And we've got no shortage of work for you after you graduate weyrlinghood," N'vanik said.
P'xan nodded once again, and stood a little bit taller. "I want to see if I can keep up with a Craft too." He said. "But right now? Kovashoth is... I still can hardly believe he chose _me_."
Kovashoth crooned, and leaned back into his rider's side and leg. }:You are Mine.:{
"Oh, what Craft?" The newly Impressed riders were only wearing their Candidate robes, no knots to indicate if they were Crafters as well.
"... Harpers, sir." P'xan responded, immediately. "I joined when I came to the Weyr. But I know Kovashoth comes first, now." He added. "He'll always come first."
One hand fell, back down to stroke the brown's hide, and Kovashoth crooned softly, eyes whirling blue green in delighted affection.
"Of course, but having a craft is good, too, even if you won't have as much time for it," N'vanik said. "Were you Searched from the Hall, then?"
P'xan shook his head. "... No, sir. A cothold, sir. But I'm a _dragonrider_ now." he repeated. "I.. I'll take good care of Kovashoth, the _best_ care." he added. and Kovashoth arched his neck proudly.
}:I am sure that you will!:{ the brown enthused.
"I'm sure you will," the Weyrleader said, not knowing he was echoing the little brown.
P'xan nodded, both to his brown and to the Weyrleader, offering another salute. "Kovashoth agrees, sir. With all of it. We'll both do our best!"
The brown weyrling was certainly eager to please. "Good luck to both of you," the Weyrleader said before he moved on to the next weyrling. There were many other new pairs to greet.
