Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 12, day 20 of Turn 3

"Now what are you going to do?" M'tias ask the blue weyrling. "You've gone though blooding and only have a little while before you join a wing."

"I don't know," D'cal said with a chuckle. "I haven't had so much time on my hands for months. I'm not sure _what_ to do with myself outside of helping the younger weyrlings."

M'tias grined. "At least you'll be joining the wings."

"It won't be so long for you, you know," D'cal reassured him. "And its not as if Thread will stop any time soon."

"Two turns. I know it won't stop, unless we're really lucky, but it's a long time to wait. All of my clutch mates are in thw wings know.
Excpet for B'vin."

Well, D'cal knew B'vin was only in the wing since he had been injured.
Must not be easy to be the youngest. "But you are making a contribution, M'tais. Don't be hard on yourself."

"I know. Still I see the wings leave, it upsets Woeth too."

"Just remind him that there will be plenty of Thread left to flight, and you'll be better prepared than any of us."

"I hope so, after what happened a few months ago I want to aviod any problems."

"Don't we all," D'cal murmured with a slight shiver. He had watched the bodies as they came in... "But that was a fluke." At least he hoped it was.

"Dosen't keep me from worring." he sighed.

"Well, lets not think about what _could_ happen. We'll never know what will happen." And a rider would have to be daft to have no doubts they would survive the pass... "Do you think you will keep up with your craft during the Pass?"

"I'm going to try. The Hallmaster is letting me train with the hall."

"Really?" D'cal asked in surprise. "That must be nice. The Seacrafter Hall is too far from here. But I have toyed with the idea of visiting shipyards on restdays sometimes."

"You miss your craft? It's doesn't seem like you could take you blue with you too often. Not sailing at anyrate."

The bluerider smiled. "Well, I didn't sail ships. I built them."

"Oh, sorry. I guess someone has too do that for there to be ships to sail."

"Well, they certainly aren't born as easily as a dragon," D'cal chuckled.

"I should know that, I grew up in Jade Harbor Hold, my father was the Steward there. I guess I never really noticed all the ships comign and going."

"Well, the big ships are all built and repaired in shipyards. It takes a lot of space and lumber to build them, so right in the middle of a busy harbor is not convenient. Its no wonder you didn't notice it."

"What part did you like best?"

"Watching one of those big ships slip into the water for the first time," D'cal smiled with a nostalgic glazed look in his eye. "Hearing it groan and creek as everything settles into place for its first moment all on its own, and knowing I and my mates were responsible bringing that moment about. And we'd all stand there and raise a pint to a job well done."

"Must be nice, to see something you've acommplished, something that's right in front of you."

"Yeah, I suppose it is," D'cal nodded. He hadn't thought about that feeling for quite some time. Riding a dragon certainly was going to be full of great accomplishments, but nothing as tangible as that. He wouldn't be able to point to a piece of Thread to his children and say 'See that one? Your Da and Grandda helped with that one...' like his father and grandfather had done as the tall ships came sailing into port.

"What would you do if thread wasn't falling and you impressed."

"I'd be at Topaz Seahold helping to rebuild," D'cal said simply, not needing to even think about the answer to that question. It was where he family was now, back at their ancestral home trying to make it like it once was, though in their hearts, they all knew it could never be the same after the storm destroyed the Hold.

M'tias wondered it would ever be possible to rebulid the Hold. He thought about Jade Harbor Hold, what if it had been destroyed as Topaz Seahold had been destroyed? The thing was they brownrider didn't think he'd ever go back to the Hold of his brith even to help rebulid.

"And you?"

"Harping, mabye in Emerald Falls."

"You wouldn't have come with the Harper Hall here?" D'cal asked curiously. He knew not everyone was happy with the change, but he was surprised to hear a dragonrider say they wanted to stay there.

"I'd have come with the hall, but I know there pleantly of folk in Emerald Falls who don't know the charter too well. Woeth and I could reach them and help." he explained.

"So you want to be a teacher than, is it?"

"I like the archives and have learned stuff I'm sure ost people don't know. I figure if I could share that imformation then it might help some folks.
So yeah I guess I do want to be a teacher, history though."

"Well," D'cal smiled, "maybe after the Pass is over you can do that.
There will still be plenty of time."

"Fourt seven, forty six turns? IF it follows the way it did in the old days."

"Exactly, you'll still only be in your sixties. Your life will only be _half_ through! There's still plenty of time for you to teach history to whoever you like. And what's better, you were _there_ for history.
The first Pass in over a thousand turns... That's an event that will be remembered for the rest of time."

"But I don't want to _be_ history." He wailed jokingly.

"Too late, my friend. We're all history now."

"You just had to say that, didn't you."

D'cal chuckled. "It was the first thing that came to mind."
