Gold shimmered down from the skies as the sun cast its rays upon the
world below. Its light spread its warmth over the earth and those who
dwelt below. Glimmering upon the water, the rays danced upon the
surface of the blue, turned silver, and shimmering gaily. Then, more
gold glimmered in the cerulean sky as a dragon winked from /between/,
her hide a pale, glorious shade of gold with a silvery sheen when the
sunlight struck her hide.
The dragon circled over the bowl and came to a landing as close to an
entrance as she could get without crowding people. The young woman
upon her back, swung down and patted her lifemate, before turning
about and striding right into the Weyr. Tugging her gloves off as she
walked quickly through the hallways, she needed no one to guide her,
no advice on where to go. This place was familiar and welcoming, and
a few minutes later, she approached the door to the Weyrwoman.
Rapping upon it, she waited for leave to enter, then opened the door
and stepped across the threshold. Immediately, her face cracked into
a smile. “Cyradis.”
“Meledei!” Cyradis stood and walked around her desk opening her arms.
The young woman she remembered had obviously matured and in a very
pleasing way. “Panitath told me that Elleth had arrived. It’s so very
good to see you!”
Immediately, Meledei fell into the woman’s embrace and hugged her
warmly. Although dragons had the ability to go /between’ and travel
anywhere in the blink of an eye, she had been unable to take much time
away from her duties up North. Now, however, she was back home, back
with people who meant so much to her. Although she had friends in the
North, the South was her home and always would be.
“It’s great to see you too!” With one last squeeze, Meledei released
the woman. Now that the initial greeting was done, her jade eyes
studied Cyradis a little more closely. “How have you been? Keeping
N’vanik in line, I hope?
Cyradis chuckled. "Like that's even possible," she smiled. "Would you
like some tea or klah," she asked as she circled back around her desk.
“I would love some tea!” Slipping into a sea across from the other,
Meledei leaned on the edge of the desk. Her eyes slid over the
office, which hadn’t changed all that much since her departure.
“Seriously though, how have things been? I feel like I’ve been gone
forever.” From a distance, nothing had changed, but Meledei knew
better than to assume that was the case in every aspect of the Weyr.
Several turns had passed, and she was certain that while there would
be familiar aspects, there would likely to be numerous differences.
"Well I'm sure you heard about the poisoning and how they tried to
kill the newly hatched dragons with their first meal. Poor flit was
the only warning we got. Or we could have lost several of them." She
half smiled. "But don't worry, we found out who did it and took care
of them. There won't be a repeat."
Meledei’s expression darkened, and she nodded. While she had been in
the North, news travelled from the South, especially thanks to the
ability of firelizards to go /between/, just like the dragons - or
rather, vice versa. “I also heard about Kapera.”
"Yes," Cyradis' shoulders dropped. "It was a great tragedy. Please be
sure to take someone with you when you leave the Weyr on business.
Either that or stay with Elleth at all times. We're still feeling our
way through this and don't want any nasty surprises." She shook her
head. "Corofel is doing what he can, but is still young. Sometimes, I
wish Corowal were still with us."
Meledei didn’t offer anything other than a nod. She had never known
Corowal, and no one could be sure the attacks wouldn’t have happened
under him. As for Corofel, she felt sorry for the young man, thrust
into such a position and having to deal with such problems when he
hadn’t really been able to find his feet yet. “Hopefully, this will
be the end of such things.” They could hope, anyway. There would
always be people who held some sort of resentment toward Dragonriders,
though Meledei could never understand why. “Is there anything you
want me to focus on when I get started tomorrow?”
"Well, first, I'd like you to meet my second, Nidre. I think you'll
like her. She's a hard worker and a good influence. Then I was
thinking you could work with the headwoman on the meal planning for
the Weyr."
Nodding, Meledei tried to push back the thoughts of the trauma her
Weyr had suffered recently. Despite the sorrow, she was simply glad
to be back, among familiar dragons, friends, and family. “I can do
that.” It was good to be back home.
"Perhaps you'd like to come with me to visit the injured in the
infirmary after 'fall?" Cyradis knew Meledei well enough that she was
aware of her good heart for her responsibilities.
“Of course.” That was one of the most important parts of her role, in
Meledei’s opinion. Threadfall scarred many a fine rider, and took
some of their own. As goldriders, they were pivotal in caring for
those of the Weyr, and making sure they knew they were seen and not
forgotten. “Put me wherever you need me.” She was back, back among
friends, familiar faces, and happy to make new acquaintances. She was
back where she belonged.
