A Stolen Moment

Writers: Yvonne

Characters: F'lin, Lynavia
Description: Seneth loses Imbeth's flight, and F'lin has a lot on his mind
Location: Barrier Lake Weyr
Date: month 6, day 17 of Turn 12

F'lin came back to himself slowly. There were rafters above him, a bed beneath him, and a warm body at his side. Not Thiseta-- he knew that much based on the irritation and disappointment that rolled off Seneth in waves. **Who won?**

}:Tzenketh.:{ Claws scraped on stone as Seneth rose and resettled on his ledge like an unhappy canine. }:If I had flown better...:{

Tzenketh, not Yumath. Q'vettan was Weyrleader. F'lin wondered how D'hol would feel about the upset. Disappointed? Relieved, after all that had happened to Kapera?

What would Q'vettan be like as Weyrleader? As a Wingleader? Q'vettan flown with Skybroom, not Ash. The Weyrharper wearing the Weyrleader's knots wasn't a bad thing for the Weyr, even though it meant changes were coming. Just... disappointing it wasn't him.

"You back with me?" a soft voice asked.

F'lin blinked and pulled his attention back to the flight cot. A young woman with red hair was smiling at him, her head resting on chin as she watched him. She was pretty and freckled, and F'lin had seen her more than once at the flight cots. He didn't know her name. "Yes."

"Thank you for the flight," she said politely. "I'm sorry that Seneth didn't win, but selfishly I'm also not."

He managed a smile. "Thanks, I guess."

"I've been hoping I could snag you after a flight for a while, and lucky for me it was a gold flight." She smiled again, revealing a small dimple in one cheek. "For what it's worth, I think you would have made a great Weyrleader."

"Thanks," he said again. Irritation at the loss was beginning to seep into his limbs and make him restless. He ran a hand through his hair and over his face in hopes of waking up a little. Drills would be cancelled for the morning... maybe the afternoon too, depending on what the new Weyrleader wanted. D'hol would have held drills.

"Can I get you some water or something?" she asked.

F'lin realized that he'd been drifting again, pulled along by Seneth's mood. He'd gone silent on the flight moth. It wasn't her fault she wasn't Thiseta. "I... thanks, but I'm all right." He'd be needed soon enough. He should get dressed and get ready.

F'lin looked at her, then made a face. **Manners.** It was hard to remember to be present when so much had changed in the span of a morning. She was a stranger, but she deserved his respect just as surely as their new Weyrleader did. "I'm sorry, I... know I've seen you around, but I can't remember your name."

She stretched and the blankets rode down her back, revealing the curve of her breasts. Her hair fell in sunset waves across pale skin. "Lynavia. I'm in the Kitchens, usually. It's all right, Wingsecond. You already have to remember all the dragonriders' names, _and_ their dragons'."

"Lynavia." He needed to be ready to greet his new Weyrleader and Wingleader but he could also smell the herbs she'd washed her hair with, and the curve of her smile matched the gentle swell of her hip. Dragonlust shot through him like a bolt of lightning.

She glanced at him from beneath her lashes. "I can leave if you want, Wingsecond..."

"No." His voice was hoarse and his hands moved of their own volition to encircle her waist. **It's just the gold flight,** he told himself. **Control yourself.**

He really didn't want to. "Are you... do you want to stay?" he asked. He thought he'd die if he had to let her go. He should let her go, put on his shoulder knots and walk out of the flight cots with his head held high.

She smiled, and that lone dimple reappeared. "I thought you'd never ask."
