Drills were half over by the time K'mai made it back to Dragonsfall.
The only thing that could be said to his credit was that he went
straight to join his Wing. Sebeth slipped into formation, as if no one
would notice they'd been missing.
}:Kyverth's will be angry with us,:{ the blue grumbled.
**He'll be angry with _me_.** K'mai knew he should feel guilty but he
just couldn't bring himself to care. He could barely even care about
how sore he was. **Don't worry about it.** He grinned as he patted
Sebeth's neck.
They immediately missed the formation change. "Whoops!"
L'keri glanced over his shoulder and winced as the dragons fanned out
into a V, leaving the lone blue floundering in the centre. **Wow, K'mai
must really want to be put on night watch.** It wasn't like him at all
to make a mistake like that, even after a hard night's partying. **Ask
Sebeth if his rider is okay?**
}:He is fine. He is just . . . distracted,:{ Sebeth answered with a
hint of disapproval.
They got into the correct position behind one of the other blues.
"Sorry! Sorry!" K'mai shouted to the nearby riders. He couldn't wait
until drills were over. He was _dying_ to tell someone.
The blue in front of K'mai was Oriath, and N'kyri had twisted back in
his straps to watch the other pair belatedly take their place. He was
laughing--hard enough that his shoulders shook under his riding
jacket--the kind of laugh that didn’t carry through the wind but was
obvious in the tilt of his head and the amused gleam in his eyes.
K'mai put his thumb to his nose and wiggled his fingers at N'kyri.
Sebeth was paying attention, which kept them from straying out of
formation several times, but K'mai had made a few more mistakes by the
time drills were over. It did nothing to sour his mood. He slid off
his blue with a grin and then winced when he hit the ground. But the
soreness in his backside only made him laugh. "You won't _believe_
what I was up to last night," he told L'keri.
"Don't tell me." L'keri heaved Rhalith's riding straps over his shoulder
as the brown took off for the summer lake. "It involved a saucy
greenrider, a bowl of whipped cream, and, um - an unusually shaped tuber?"
"Let's grab some food and I'll tell you _all_ about it." K'mai looked
around at N'kyri and his other wingmates. "_Everyone_ needs to hear
this, come on!"
A short while later, they were sitting around the regular Cyan Wing
table. K'mai glanced around at his fellow riders, building just the
tiniest bit of suspense. He was far too eager to tell the tale, so he
barely waited until everyone was seated before he said, "I spent last
night with a goldrider . . . _and_ a bronzerider."
"Uh huh," said J'ler. "And I spent it with Lord Zathris and Lady
Benani. Only they had the good manners to get me out the door in the
morning in time to make it to drills." He joked, but he was a little
envious.
K'mai chuckled. "I don't need to make up stories about my adventures
between the furs."
"You don't need to," N'kyri agreed. “And yet this still sounds like
the lead in to a joke."
K'mai tilted his head. "Actually, it could make a good joke. A
bluerider, a goldrider, and a bronzerider walk into a tavern. Hmm, I'm
not sure what the punchline would be, except maybe 'and that's why I
was late for drills.' We really were at the tavern. He bought me a
drink. The bronzerider," K'mai said with a smug smile.
"Well, now I know you're making it up." L'keri gave him a look of mock
disbelief. "A bronzerider bought someone a drink?"
K'mai laughed. "I was surprised, too. I'd noticed him and the
goldrider checking me out, and I thought maybe she was interested.
Maybe he liked to watch. But the server brought over a drink and said
it was from _him_." He looked around the table, his eyes bright. "I
_have_ been in bed with a bronzerider before, sharing a woman, and
they were oh-so-careful about how we touched." K'mai rolled his eyes.
Of course there was one particular bronzerider he'd had sex with
several times, but he definitely wasn't mentioning that. "But this
time, I don't just mean this bronzerider was in bed with me, I mean he
was _in_ me. I'm so sore, but it was _so_ worth it."
"Don't just sit there all smug and glowing!" N'kyri sputtered. "Which
goldrider? Which bronze? Because now you have me wondering about all
of them!" Not Saibra and R'enh, surely... But who, then?
K'mai waved a finger. "I'm not going to name names. I do have a
_little_ restraint. I will say it definitely wasn't the first time
they've had a third in their bed, so maybe someday one of you will be
as lucky as I was." He knew it was bad to tell the entire Wing about
this at all, but he couldn't help himself. It wasn't like Aydhan and
N'kevyn had told him to keep it secret.
G'zan took a drink from his ale mug and then leaned in. "You don't
gotta _tell_. We can figure it out I bet. They're not like the rest of
us -- we're an sixteenth-mark a dozen. There's only gotta be so many
bronzeriders that are hooked up with a goldrider _and_ willing to buy
a man a drink in public!" He squinted, as if thinking very hard, then
shook his head and grinned. "If the bronzer's that good, you think
he'd be up for it without the lady around? Or is she like... a beard?"
K'mai snort-laughed. "No, no! Definitely not. They're very much a
couple. Hmm . . . I wonder if he _would_ be up for a little fun
without her. Though a large part of the appeal was getting to be a
treat they were sharing." His gaze turned dreamy and distant.
"Flaming skies..." J'ler was wide-eyed and blushing hotly now,
imagining himself in such a scenario. He bet it would not even be that
hard. He already knew a bronzerider-- really _knew_ him in the
relevant way. But something told him it would be pretty difficult to
convince Sybana to join them.
"So it's true I've never bagged a Lord and his Lady." J'ler was not
sure what had come over him, but he could not stop himself. The boast
just overflowed out of him before he could consider what he was
saying. "But I've been with a bronzerider loads of times." Heheh.
Loads. "He's practically my boyfriend."
Shit. Why had he said that? Shit. Shit shit shit.
K'mai's attention swung to him, expression eager. "Oh, _really_? Who's
that?"
Don't say his name. Don't say it, J'rel. JADIREL. Don't do it, thought
J'ler to J'ler.
"E'kirim. Rider of the most august Norrianth."
FLAME IT, J'LER!
"The new bronze weyrling? Well, that _is_ interesting." K'mai added
him to the list. That was four now, with _three_ just at Dragonsfall.
Shards and shells, how had he missed all this?
"He'd probably go for a tumble with you, too, if you asked," said
J'ler. "Then again, I don't know how he feels about bedding the
elderly."
N'kyri snorted into his mug of ale and began to cough.
K'mai laughed. "_Elderly_. Maybe I should show you _and_ your
boyfriend the benefits of experience." The bluerider grinned. "Maybe
you can think about that for the next few months until he's off
weyrling restrictions."
"Psh, don't threaten me with a good time." J'ler winked. Nothing would
beat E'kirim coming off of weyrling restrictions, but he would not say
no to something wild, not after everything he had already said yes to.
K'mai leaned closer. "A bronze and a brown at the same time would be
new for me." The past few months had been full of new experiences.
Two of anyone at the same time would be new for J'ler. Truth be told,
he would rather the third wheel be a woman, but what kind of man would
he be if he passed up the opportunity for a threesome?
"I guess we'll have to draw straws to see who gets to be in the
middle. Unless you can last long enough for everyone to get a turn."
G'zan's eyes went back and forth between the two like he was watching
the ball bounce between two sides of a sporting match. "That's a
challenge K'mai -- you got the honor of all us older guys on your
shoulders right now, you can't fail us. These young fellas will never
take us seriously in bed again if you fail! No pressure or anything."
Nevermind that K'mai was even less of an "older guy" than G'zan
himself was, of course. It was the principle of the thing. "How do we
get E'kirim tapped for Cyan, boys? You think maybe if we begged L'val
real sweet...? I want a bronzerider who reciprocates."
"You think L'val would say yes if we both got on our knees for him?"
K'mai smlrked at G'zan. "Even if we can't get E'kirim into the Wing,
I'm inviting him to our parties." Then he turned back to J'ler. "I can
last, you little whippersnapper. Maybe if you ask very, _very_ nicely,
I'll let you be in the middle."
J'ler fluttered his eyelashes at K'mai and grinned.
"Mm, pretty please?" He was only half joking. He should have known
what joking like that got him by then. But then again, was that not
exactly what he wanted?
L'val had _intended_ to not wait until partway through lunch to
address the situation, but he'd been waylaid by a conversation with a
Healer about his daughter's newest ear infection. So his mood was
already sour when he arrived in the dining hall. He considered
immediately dragging K'mai out by the literal ear, but seeing a court
of his riders whispering like a gaggle of Lady's maids at a Hold, he
instead started sneaking up on his own regular table like a feline
hunting a tunnelsnake to see what he could overhear - and got so
caught up in the _rider_ gossip that his eyebrows practically hit his
hairline. Hearing his own name invoked reminded him he was supposed
to actually talk to them and not just eavesdrop.
So he strode closer and stood directly behind K'mai, folding his arms
as he stared at them all. "What am I hearing about you getting on your
knees for me, K'mai? It's not going to get you out of a conversation
about _exactly_ how much watch duty you might be assigned for today's
stunt."
K'mai turned around with a guilty smile. "But it might be nice for
both of us anyway, sir?"
"Given the way you talk about your reputation, I'm sure it might be
nice. Now look, I know it disappoints everyone here, but I don't dally
in my own Wing outside of the flightroom, so unless Sebeth turns green
or something else creative happens, no."
"I have a chance, woe to the rest of you," T'vret said smugly.
"I _could_ leave when Evryath rises," L'val threatened, no real heat to it.
T'vret stuck his tongue out in response.
L'val's face became more serious. "K'mai, talk to me in the office as
soon as you're done eating. I will let the rest of you finish your
meal, but do try to not overinflate K'mai's ego such that he can't
make it _into_ the office."
"Yes, sir." Even that only managed to dampen K'mai's mood slightly. "I
can assume this won't be the fun kind of spanking."
"Bet it was worth it though," said J'ler, once he was sure enough that
L'val would not hear him say so.
"Oh definitely. _More_ than worth it." K'mai sighed happily. "You've
got a few months to practice those begging skills, and then maybe I'll
give you and your bronzeboy a night worth bragging about."
"As long as you're trying out bronzeriders," G'zan said, "I expect to
see 'em rated. I wanna know how many stars."
K'mai laughed. "I need at least a few more before I start rating
them." N'kevyn had been amazing. Big and strong, a playful version of
the kind of bronzerider K'mai had fantasized about. But if he had to
compare, he would still rank I'serin higher. Something about the shy,
inexperienced Weyrleader drove him wild. Not _completely_
inexperienced, though. Shards, the way he'd used his mouth on K'mai .
. . the bluerider smiled to himself.
L'keri cleared his throat. "I think we've all forgotten the really
important question here: who is the goldrider? And if she likes
bronzeriders and blueriders...might she be into brownriders, too?"
"You should ask every goldrider you meet, just to be sure." K'mai snickered.
Scoffing good naturedly, N'kyri nudged L'keri. "Reckon we can figure
it out without that. There's only what, a few dozen of them on the
entire continent? And even fewer are 'very much a couple' with a
bronzerider. I bet we can uncover both names before the next restday."
"Ooh, break out the magnifying lens, y'all, we're looking for clues,"
said J'ler.
"Just, uh . . . maybe don't mention you heard it from me," K'mai said.
