Aleriand

Aleriand

To Zariah, over the din of the huge presses Aleriand said, "That's fine, they are the spectacle. You're the least annoying tour we've brought in here since we opened."

Zariah snickered, “Raleri is on her best behavior. Thank you for letting me bring her. I’m trying to convince her there are options other than dragons.”

The girl wasn’t entirely managing to stay out of everyone’s way, but she at least wasn’t causing anyone to shoo her away.

"We have those here, but we also have Dolphin Cove Weyr routinely disrupting my apprentices." Aleriand griped. "And we've had at least one Impress, so I'm afraid they'll just keep coming."

“I wouldn’t be upset if she Impressed, but I’d rather she got excited about something a little… safer. These machines don’t actually squash apprentices, do they?”

Zariah kept a wary eye on her daughter, although she was standing well back from one of the machines, listening to some explanation about the mechanics that Zariah couldn’t hear. What mattered was that she had her hands safely out of the way.

"Not usually." Aleriand deadpanned. "There are some printers at Dragonsfall, if she wants to take up the half-apprenticeship option like the candidate kids. I won't say no to full-time apprentices here, either, if she's interested."

“I’m working on it. I was never smart enough to get into a craft, really, but she's smarter than me. Dragonsfall has some… new residents that I'd rather get her away from. They've already stayed longer and caused more chaos than I’d like, and I heard some might be wanting to make it a permanent home,” by contrast, the printer hall seemed like a more peaceful setting, even with the noise.

"I've heard about that." Aleriand said with a nod. He got copies of the Weyr reports just in case anyone else tried to accuse him or his printers of spreading defamatory statements. "Well, she's more than welcome to apprentice with us. We're a new Hall and I need as many hands as I can get, and kids that enjoy working with them. The rest we can teach."

“Thank you. Her foster mothers and I hope she wants to, but I don’t know if she’s entirely on board or not. She was very excited to see the printers. The Weyr doesn’t have anything of this scale and she likes machines. She’s a very clever girl, you know.” There was clear pride in Zariah’s tone. “Thank you for spending some time giving us the tour. I know you’re a busy man.”

"I'm sure she is. Well she's welcome here, whenever she decides she likes it. I'll let my Journeymen at Dragonsfall know to keep an eye out for her, too." Aleriand said. "We have a couple that are dragonriders as well, so maybe that'll endear her to it. Reduced hours which means publications aren't as fast there, but knowing she can do both might help sway her. Has she met O'dyn?"

“She has not. I didn’t even think about it. In my head he’s just another rider, but he was a Printer and I’d be shocked if he’s more than two Turns older than her. What a good idea. I’ll have to get him to drop by Dragonsfall or something one day.” Zariah looked surprised she hadn’t thought of it. Surely a young rider would be a good way to convince a teen something was cool.

"I'm sure O'dyn would love it. I can send him to you with a nonsense letter, even." Aleriand said mildly. "And they told me that I should get a firelizard for my mail service. O'dyn is much better, even if the success rate is about the same."
