Description: Galgaith compels her young clutchmates to try their wings before they’re cleared to fly
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 5, day 16 of Turn 12
As the pack of dragonets crested the rise, Galgaith finally turned, her wings flared wide, eyes swirling bright and eager as she finally revealed her master plan, }:We are going to _fly_!:{
Behind her was sheer drop into the weyr proper. (Low, by Dragonsfall standards, but high enough). Above her, dragons wheeled through the sky.
Orysteth gazed down over the cliff thoughtfully, then turned back and sat down next to Galgaith, his back straight and his head cocked slightly. }:Or perhaps fall,:{ he pointed out reasonably. }:I do try to make good choices, but it seems to me that we’ll not know which is the _good_ choice until we’re in the sky up there or the ground down there. I suspect one of them will hurt.:{
}:I suspect you’re a dumb wherry,:{ Zollarth snorted, slinking over to peer over the side, himself. }:Galgaith, if we fly, do you think we’ll get extra dinner?:{
She hadn’t considered that, but in her exuberance and the excitement of the moment, it seemed plausible. }:Yes!:{
Kyllavath studied the area with a very cautious whirling of his multi-faceted eyes. }:It looks questionable to me,:{ the brown said to his peers. But still, he didn’t want to be the _only_ one not to jump. He flexed his wings out, testing them.
}: I think we can do it, :{ Roeth remarked as he eyed the drop as well. He flexed his wings experimentally.
Respelleth copied the brown dragonet beside her and flapped her wings in tandem. }:I think we can do it!:{
}:I _know_ we can do it,:{ boomed Galgaith. }:We are strong. We are fast. We are dragons. Dragons _fly_.:{
That made perfect sense to Kyllavath. Galgaith _was_ perfect sense, the brown thought with a sigh. She was everything. }:Should… should you go first?:{ He asked Galgaith, since she was their leader and everything.
}:I will take point,:{ said Adamanth, }:with your permission, Lady Galgaith.:{ Queens did not fly into danger at the forefront. That was what bronzes were for.
But Galgaith wasn’t thinking about wing formations or even Thread. Danger was not on her mind, only her singular goal: flight. }:No, good Adamanth. Kyllavath is right. _I_ will go first. I am the biggest. I am the strongest. I will prove we can. You will all follow.:{
She didn’t leave much room for argument, not in her tone, or the way she abruptly turned and _leapt_ from the ledge.
It was a powerful leap, fueled by fearless optimism and Galgaith’s immense bulk. For a moment, it _worked_. The young gold climbed into the air, muscling herself up several feet through sheer grit and determination, her eyes locked on the grown dragons sculling high above, dragons she was anxious to join. }:Follow me,:{ she bellowed back to her clutchmates on the ledge. }:Fly, fly!:{
Throughout this, Norrianth lowered himself to the ground like a feline, his hindquarters twitching just a little as he gathered himself to charge. He leapt into action shortly after Galgaith, charging two long strides before throwing himself into the air after her.
Paskith hesitated, spreading his wings, giving them an experimental flap. _Can they do this?_ Yes, yes they could!!
Emboldened by Galgaith’s words, Roeth leapt into the air behind Norrianth. His wings missed working in tandem on the first flap but he got it on the second, and the third, and then he was lifting higher after his kin.
Zollarth didn’t really care what Galgaith said -- but he could practically _taste_ the extra dinner that he was now sure he would get. It was almost as delicious as the praise that would undoubtedly be heaped upon him once he flew circles around everyone else.
Except what _actually_ happened was a running start and a leap, and abrupt panic that caught him off-guard as he suddenly found himself without solid ground beneath. His long wings snapped outward, catching the wind, but he couldn’t steady himself enough to stay aloft, and he forgot to flap. It was a mess of midnight blue dragon, squealing as he realized he was losing control and falling.
Kiziolth peered over the ledge, trepidation and excitement bubbling in equal parts in her little chest as other dragons rushed past her. She hopped backwards a few paces and flexed her wings like she practiced. She ran one and a half hops, going into the leap too soon and tipping over the edge instead. The strong downbeat of her wings kept her aloft, if not sailing very fast.
Most of the others had already leaped before Adamanth had time to say another word. He huffed, but he pretended as though bringing up the rear was the next most obvious place for him. To make sure everyone was all right, of course.
}:Will you go?:{ Adamanth asked a hesitating classmate.
}:Hmm… no,:{ said Orysteth, after a moment’s thought. }:I think not. It seems to me more bad idea than good idea at the moment.:{
}:There is no shame if you cannot. But if you can, you surely must. Our Queen requires it,:{ said Adamanth. }:I will leave you to decide for yourself whether you cannot, or whether you will not. As for me, I will go.:{
And Adamanth went.
