Aleriand

Aleriand

Zariah had done her book deliveries the day before, so the appearance of Relsath over the Printer Hall wasn’t expected, though she was a familiar enough sight not to cause any alarm. Zariah hopped down off the green and headed into the hall to look for Master Aleriand. She had a jittery air to her, although she still smiled and nodded at everyone she passed in pursuit of the printer.

Most of the Hall had retired for the evening, though there was no shortage of wide-eyed apprentices and kitchenfolk eager to catch a look at the green dragon and rider, regardless of her knots and whether she was on Search or not. Aleriand himself was right where Zariah expected and not where he should be; elbow deep in grease and ink and press pieces scattered across a table that had been dragged closer. "Did the deliveries go well yesterday, Zariah?" He asked.

“Well enough,” Zariah said, “but it was a pretty long day. Which is part of why I was hoping to talk to you. Now that O’dyn is helping out, I thought it might be a good time to discuss the terms of my employment with the Printerhall.” There was a long pause before she realized she was holding her breath and forced herself to let it out.

"The terms of your employment." Aleriand repeated mildly. "We have doubled the number of dragons at the Printers, that's true, even if the other employee is fourteen and has a curfew. What would you like to change?"

“Well, as you pointed out, I’ve recently taken on training and supervisory responsibilities. I think it's only fair that my compensation be adjusted to match the additional work,” Zariah had clearly rehearsed this.

"I'll have to tell him that you're his supervisor, now." Aleriand said, "Genireth can talk to Relsath much easier than O'dyn can talk to me. I'm sure he'd appreciate your support."

“O’dyn and I are in dramatically different timezones. There will be additional fees for after hours communications,” Zariah countered a little frantically.

"He's seven candlemarks ahead of you and has a curfew." Aleriand added, "Though extra compensation for supervisory duties is fair. That saves me quite a bit of trouble. Will you take on supervisory duties for any other riders?"

“That depends. How much are you planning to expand the delivery services? O’dyn already takes up some time on my off days,” not that she truly minded, he was a good kid.

"Not quickly. I'd prefer to keep everyone in their time zones, or nearby. You must be exhausted after running Emerald Falls and Dolphin Cove deliveries."

“You aren’t wrong,” Zariah admitted, “it makes for some very long days. I know a few Barrier Lake riders, I could see if anyone else is interested, but I expect to keep my seniority even if some blue or brown with an ego signs up.”

"Does a bronze skip seniority, irregardless of ego?" Aleriand mused.

“Oh I would discourage the bronzes.”

The Hallmaster nodded in agreement. "And what kind of raise are you expecting for services rendered?"

“I’m afraid I can’t accept anything less than two more book subscriptions,” the greenrider said seriously.

"That's triple what we currently pay you." Aleriand said just as seriously. "Two memberships, considering you supervise a team of one. We'll discuss an increase in payment with an increase in staff."

Zariah paused, clearly considering protesting, but she really only needed the second one for Raleri today. “That’s… fair enough for now. We’ll talk after I’ve found a likely new recruit. If you can get enough hands- or rather wings, you could probably do a second delivery a month. Our customers complain I’m not around enough.”
