"J'ler!" E'kirim called the moment he caught sight of the brownrider in the dining hall. He was through the crowd in an instant, looping an arm around J'ler's and grinning broadly. He wasn't sure how much he was _allowed_ to touch, but Norrianth was so deeply asleep that E'kirim doubted he would rouse. "Did you see me? Did you see Norrianth?"
“I saw, I saw everything!” J’ler answered with excited pride for his friend. “Have you seen K’aur yet? Flames, I wish I had been sitting near him so I could have seen his face!”
"Oh yes, I've seen K'aur." E'kirim said brightly, though he squeezed J'ler's arm as he did. Something to talk about another time, away from the crowd and without Norrianth's slumber weighing so heavily in his mind. "My sisters said he went as bright as a redfruit. I would've paid marks to see it. I'm gonna get a sick scar now, too!" He pulled his already-low neckline over just a bit to show off the bandage. "Zaphare's blue caught me, the little shit."
“I saw the blood,” said J’ler. “I was worried for a second, but you looked like it didn't even hurt!” J’ler knew it did, though. “By the time you can show it to me, it's gonna look so cool.”
"Pff. We'll see if Norrianth minds, or whatever." E'kirim rolled his eyes and grinned. It was hard to feel anything except happy and tired, but the restrictions on touch still seemed like a made-up rule. "This was Zaphare's blue. Came right at me. I would've moved if I'd known he was going for her and not me. He's a handsome shade of blue. Not like poor, dull Norrianth."
“Oh, you be nice to that baby-- he’s handsome, too,” J’ler admonished. “Very shiny. So-- you finally see what I mean, right? About them talking to you?”
"He looks like the cross between a baby dray beast and a jumping bug." E'kirim said with a laugh. "He got real mad when I told him, too. Stomped around and snorted at me. It's like he heard me saying I didn't want a boring colour." His tone stayed light and fond, gently teasing. "I can see how we got the ballads. He makes his demands pretty clear, but I wouldn't say he _talks_. Certainly a clever critter, though, like Maishoth."
J’ler laughed. But then stared for a moment.
“Wait, you're… He really doesn't say words to you?” It seemed incomprehensible. How could anyone think he composed all those rhymes himself?
E'kirim had never heard those rhymes, so he laughed along without really understanding. "I definitely didn't get how you got there when we first met, but it's like he talks. He makes his opinion known, that's for sure. He got real demanding over the feeding buckets, and then over which wallow he wanted. He's going to be a handful." He squeezed J'ler's arm again. "I think I see Ki'ben and Gienah. They haven't showered me in praise for standing in a circle yet. C'mon."
