It was past dinnertime and the dining hall was emptying out. K'mai wandered in, looking for a way to kill some time before his companion for the evening arrived. There were a few friends around, but they were occupied with companions of their own. Then he saw an unfamiliar man sitting at one of the tables. Curious, he decided to go over and introduce himself. If the man was friendly, maybe they could share a few drinks. "Hello," he said as he approached, "I'm K'mai, rider of blue Sebeth. I don't think I've seen you around before."
"Probably because I haven't been around before. Least not as long as you've been here, I should think." The mastercraftsman smiled and pointed to the seat across from him. "If you're looking for someone to share a pint with, there's a seat open. Well, a few actually."
K'mai smiled and took a seat. "So what brings you to the Weyr?"
The older man raised his glass slightly in a silent 'cheers' and took a sip. After picking the white froth from his mustache he replied, "A bad back and a need to take it easy for a while. Well, easier. I'm here to teach some of your apprentices."
"Oh, really?" The rider's eyebrows went up. "What craft?"
"Mining. I'm a geologist," he replied as he caught a drip of beer on his finger.
"So you spend a lot of time looking at rocks?" K'mai asked teasingly as he poured himself a glass of beer.
"It seems to be an occupational hazard," Zeb chuckled. "When I've been out alone after a couple sevendays I even start _talking_ to them."
K'mai took a sip. "Well, as long as the rocks aren't talking _back_."
"That only happens after a couple months," the master reassured him with a cheeky grin. "And you? Did you ever craft?"
"Oh, no. I managed to escape that!" K'mai chuckled.
"Escape?" Zeb asked with a raised eyebrow. "It's not _that_ bad, lad."
"When I was younger, crafting seemed like too much work to me." K'mai took another drink. "Little did I know what I would be in for as a dragonrider!"
"But I doubt you would go back and change anything," the master said knowingly as he whipped more drops of his whiskers with the back of his hand.
K'mai nodded. "I wouldn't have it any other way."
"What will you do when the Pass is over, though," Zeb asked curiously. "You'll still be a young man."
"Relax," he said with a wide grin.
"Well, I suppose you dragonmen will have deserved it," the master said as he raised his glass slightly to his companion.
K'mai lifted his glass as well. "Thank you."
Zeb drained the rest of his mug. "Am I keeping you from your company tonight?"
"Oh, no. I'm waiting for someone." The blurider's eyes shifted to a point behind the miner. "And I think I see her coming right now." He drained his own glass.
"Well, fly her high," the master replied with a knowing wink. He just might have to look for a little company of this own...
"I will." K'mai grinned as he stood. "Oh! I didn't catch your name."
"Zeb," the craftsman said holding out his hand. "Just call me Zeb."
K'mai took his hand and shook it. "It was nice meeting you, Zeb. I'll see you around."
