"Master Zebrekhan," began the Weyrleader. "Glad to hear you are settling here." K'sedel offered a hand to the Master Miner.
The master crafter wasn't sure if settling was quite the idea - he was known for his wanderlust after all - but he appreciated the Weyrleader's sentiment all the same. "Thank you sir. Please, just call me Zeb."
"Only if you call me K'sedel." His riders could call him 'Sir', but formality be damned in private.
"I suppose I can agree to that," Zeb said as he gave the Weyrleader's hand a firm shake. "This is certainly a pretty spot you have here."
"It is indeed, although it does take some getting used to, the heat and humidity I mean." K'sedel grinned.
"Well, that doesn't much bother me anymore. I've lived in the deserts, in the jungle, on tropical shores and on frozen mountaintops. Not much gets to me anymore."
"Sounds a bit like me. Thayan Peak as was, the Farmcraft Hall, Dolphin Cove Weyr, Dream's End, and now here. Although the moving around is a bit easier with Nikornath."
"That is true," Zeb nodded. "Although, there is something to be said for traveling across land and sea. You see things a bit more up close and personal than from the air. Though not nearly as swift."
"There is something to be said about riding on a runnerbeast though,"
K'sedel smiled, a memory of his younger days as a crafter flitting through his head.
"Don't you get out to ride at all?" his companion asked curiously.
"Surely you have some time to dabble in a hobby."
"Not in turns, somehow I get the impression that while Nikornath wouldn't think of a runner as food, he might not be too happy at the idea."
"Really?" Zeb asked curiously. "A bronze dragon would be afraid of being replaced by a _runner_?"
"Not so much being replaced, more the fact that he knows they are scared of him. Felines and canines on the other hand..."
"He's the jealous type, is he?"
"It's more like he enjoys the attention he gets."
Zeb laughed. "I would think as the lead bronze of the Weyr he would be getting quite a bit of attention. But I suppose it's your attention that counts."
"You'd be right there."
"How about hiking? Do you enjoy a good hike now and then?"
"I've been known to."
"I'd love to keep it up if I can," Zeb admitted. "If there are any good trails around here you could recommend I would be much obliged."
"You can follow the beach a good way to start with."
"Please, no more beaches," the geologist groaned. "I spent two turns trudging up and down beaches studying the sand grains. I think it ruined walking on the beach for me for life. All that sand can get into some _nasty_ places."
K'sedel grinned, "There's always along the Bluff itself, some nice views."
"That sounds more like it," Zeb grinned. "Do you mind showing me a path some time?"
"Not a problem."
"I appreciate it," the craftsman smiled. "But I suppose you get roped into showing all us new folks around."
"To be honest, I thought that the Weyrwoman, Tsaera might have been to introduce herself. You two have something in common."
"Yes, we studied together at the Mining Hall when we were young."
"Then I'm sure she'll be glad to catch up with you after so many turns."
"Well, we really didn't know each other that well at the time, but we do have many old friends in common." Luckily, Zeb had kept up with several of them over the turns.
"That's always nice to hear."
Writing to friends had been the only thing he had to do many nights out on long treks. His little Slate was so patient with him, taking letters to and fro. "Do you keep up with your friends of old? Or from your crafting days?"
"I'm weyrbred," replied the bronzerider. "Only spent a few turns away from dragons."
"Do you have any friends from your short excursion into the rest of Pern?"
"Not anymore, the plague came."
"Ah," Zeb nodded. There was no more explanation than that needed.
"Anyway, I came here to welcome you to River Bluff, which I hope I have done."
"Quite well, yes," the master nodded. "I appreciate your taking the time."
"It was a pleasure."
