N'kevyn

N'kevyn

Avicath had grumbled all throughout practice that his straps were too
tight, and as N’kevyn sat on the floor of his weyr with them spread
out around him, he sighed. “Avi, I can’t let these out any more than
this. If you get any rounder, you’re going to need a whole new set.”

That did not have the effect he’d hoped, and the bronze whipped his
head around towards him, eyes whirling in interest, }: Can they be
black? :{

“No. No this is bad. If you keep eating Tymmie’s offerings, you’re
going to be rolling around the Weyr.” N’kevyn sighed again as he moved
a buckle out to the last available hole, giving it a tug to test it.
“No more herdbeasts.”

}: I can’t leave it on the ledge. It will go bad,:{ the bronze said logically.

“And there’s absolutely no choice _other_ than to eat them? Surely
there’s hungry weyrlings or injured dragons.”

}: I never asked. I just ate them. Tymborikath asked me to. I can’t
say no to her,:{ the bronze said innocently.

Having heard the two jostling and bickering over space on their ledge
during snow storms back at High Reaches, N’kevyn knew for a fact that
was a lie. “Oh, I’m sure she used her gold influence to encourage you
to gorge yourself on the offerings of her fans.” Avicath didn’t say
anything, and he wasn’t looking at his rider anymore. It reminded
N’kevyn of the children. He chuckled; it had probably been a toddler
who taught him about fibbing in the first place. “No more herdbeasts,”
he said sternly, "You're going to get more exercise. Go for a swim. Go
chase a green."

Avicath looked out at the late afternoon sky hopefully, then sighed,
}:No greens.{

“It’s a Weyr. There will be one green or another rising tomorrow.”

}:You said I chased too many greens,:{ the bronze said suspiciously.

He _had_ said that. A new Weyr meant new greens he’d never chased
before, and the bronze had been doing his best to make the rounds.
N’kevyn had put his foot down, but it was clear that left the bronze
with too much time on his claws. At least until the local bronzes
stopped courting Tym with food offerings. “For now, you can chase
greens until your straps fit right again.”

Gathering up the straps, he took them out, putting them on the bronze
for the second time today. Making a few final adjustments, he asked,
“How does that feel?” The bronze stretched and took a few deep breaths
while N’kevyn tugged the straps, testing them with his weight..

}: Fine,:{ he said grumpily. }:I want new ones.:{

“Listen. If you can get back down to the smaller size, I’ll see that
you get some nice new straps. Deal?”

That brightened the bronze’s attitude immensely, }:So if I chase all
the greens, I can have new straps?:{

N’kevyn wasn’t sure if he’d just won this argument or not. “Yes. If
you chase the greens- and go for a swim, you can have new- wait wait-”
he grabbed a strap as the bronze made to take off, as if his weight
were going to keep the dragon anchored. It did, actually. “You can’t
go swimming in your gear.”

}:Because I’d ruin it?:{ Avicath asked hopefully.

“Because you’ll ruin it and I’ll fall.” The dragon scoffed at the
thought that he would ever let his rider fall, but he let his rider
take his straps off before he took off… hopefully in the direction of
a swim.
