He felt the blood drain from his face when he saw Cyradis lying on the
floor. **Call a healer!** N'vanik ran to her and knelt down, first
checking her head and then her belly for any outward signs of damage.
}:One is coming.:{ Loseth rubbed against his mate, crooning softly.
Cyradis was completely confused when she came back. Her head hurt and
she groaned, opening her eyes slowly. "What happened?"
"You collapsed." Seeing her awake and talking, N'vanik felt like he
could breathe again. "Are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere?"
Franah arrived, face flushed and out of breath from running across the
Weyrbowl. "Weyrwoman, are you in any pain?" She knelt and began
examining her for any injury to her head, neck, or spine to determine
if it was safe to move her.
She closed her eyes against the light that seemed too bright. "My head
hurts, and my shoulder," she said.
The healer gently touched Cyradis's head and then moved to her
shoulder, where she found scrapes. "All right, the injuries seem to be
superficial. Let's get her to bed." Franah moved to help her up, but
N'vanik scooped up his tiny Weyrwoman, carrying her easily.
"I should toss you off the Heights for scaring me like that." N'vanik
set her gently down on the furs.
Franah came over with her bag. "I'm just going to make sure
everything's all right with the baby, Weyrwoman."
She flinched and closed her eyes while sunlight swept over her face.
"Alright," she said to the healer. Her head just felt fuzzy when she
tried to process what was happening.
N'vanik watched nervously as Franah felt along Cyradis's stomach and
then listened for the baby's heartbeat. A faint smile curved her lips.
"Everything seems all right. You scraped your shoulder, but that's
superficial. You bumped your head pretty good, but it doesn't seem to
be serious." She patted Cyradis's uninjured shoulder. "I'll get you a
cool cloth for your head."
N'vanik brushed a strand of hair from her face. "No more meetings for you."
"Dessa's not ready to take my meetings N'vanik," she protested but
only mildly. "I need a new Headwoman and a competent 'second. You
can't take on my workload."
"You let me worry about that. _You_ are going to _rest_." N'vanik was
just going to have to push off more work onto others and force people
to step up.
Franah returned and pressed a damp, cool cloth to Cyradis's forehead.
"You'll likely have a headache and be sensitive to light for a bit. As
an extra precaution either I or another journeyman will check on you
every candlemark for the next six. And the Weyrleader is right, you
must not overexert yourself."
"Yes, thank you Franah," she nodded and was immediately sorry. The
movement hurt! She threw her arm over her eyes. "Can someone pull the
curtain?" She peeked one eye at N'vanik. "Okay but please don't
complain and put some feelers out for a new 'second? I have some ideas
for the Headwoman. You know Islea wants to go play with her
grandchildren. We can't keep holding onto her."
"We can manage," N'vanik insisted as he went over to pull the curtain.
"I'll send out some more letters about getting you a 'Second. The
domestic side isn't my domain, but I know how to manage with a
shortage of people." When he was first Weyrleader, Dolphin Cove was
still suffering from the losses of a disastrous Threadfall.
“Yes you can,“ she said. “ But I wish you didn’t have to. “
Her mind revolved as she thought, so many things that she needed to
pay attention to. But now it’s not a good time. “Would you mind asking
D’hol To come get Kielya for a while?”
"I can do that. Stop worrying about everything." N'vanik sat on the
edge of the bed. "We have good, competent people and they can handle a
little more for a while."
“But it’s my job to worry,” this time she smiled up at him.
