Late! Sorry...

D'ren was making his way to the dining hall when he spotted a familiar face. "F'lin! Hey F'lin!"

F'lin turned, his arms full of bedding, and grinned broadly when he saw the other bronzerider. "D'ren! I'd heard you transferred, and I was wondering when I'd run into you!"

"So you're transferring here too?"

F'lin nodded. He couldn't quite keep the broad grin from his face. "I am. I actually interviewed with D'hol..."

"Oh, that's my Wing. What did he say?" D'ren brightened even more at the idea of his friend being in the same Wing.

F'lin's smile somehow grew wider. "He said that you should be calling me Wingsecond!"

D'ren's eyes went wide and he clapped his fellow bronzerider on the arm. "Congratulations!"

"Thanks! I'm really happy." F'lin started back down the hall, gesturing for D'ren to walk with him. "It'll be... interesting, I think. K'sedel and K'ran I think are different to work with than D'hol. You've been flying with him for a while. Got any tips?"

"Don't make _any_ mistakes," D'ren said with a laugh. "He's very strict." And rumor had it D'hol used to be even _worse_.

F'lin snorted. "_That_ I'd heard. I think it'll be an adjustment to work with him, after working with K'ran and K'sedel." He was grateful that the other two men had taken the time to teach him. Without their patience and knowledge, D'hol wouldn't even have considered him. **I won't let you down,** he thought. "Have you gotten your hand slapped yet?"

D'ren sighed. "Yes. And trust me, once was more than enough." He didn't want his new Weyrleader to think he and Menanath were prone to mistakes.

"What happened?" F'lin asked curiously.

"Just made a small mistake, nothing serious," D'ren said. "Too slow getting back into position after flaming a rope. Menanth got
distracted trying to show off for a green. It was just a few seconds, that's all. I swear that man has eyes in the back of his head."

"I'd heard that about D'hol. He also has a good record for getting his riders through a 'Fall with a minimum of 'Scoring, so at least the eyes on the back of his head are useful. I'll need to work on developing my own." He cocked his head sideways so that D'ren could see the back of his head. "Think a set of eyes back here will scare off the greenriders?"

D'ren laughed, trying to imagine it. "Maybe some, but I think the rest might _overlook_ it."

"Anyone you have your eyes on?" F'lin asked curiously. There were so many new faces at Barrier Lake Weyr, although there were many familiar ones, as well.

"In what way?"

F'lin arched an eyebrow. "The kind of way where you see someone and tell yourself, I should get to know _her_ better."

"Oh, well that." D'ren looked away. "Er, not really." He was a bronzerider which meant he didn't lack for attention from women of all kinds. But that was about the color of his dragon's hide, the idea of what he was supposed to be. It wasn't about _him_ at all.

"Ah well. There's time, and plenty of new transfers. And this is me!" F'lin stopped in front of the door to his new weyr. "If you let me drop this off, want to have dinner together?" It would be nice to spend his first evening in the dining cavern with a friend.

D'ren nodded. "I'd love to. Here, let me get that." He stepped around F'lin to open the door and then moved out of the way so he wouldn't block the view. "Nice, isn't it?" The new weyrs at Barrier Lake were lovely.

F'lin stepped inside and paused. It wasn't River Bluff and he missed the shapes and feel of his home, but this _would_ be home, and he'd be here for as long as they'd have him. And, admittedly, it _was_ a beautiful space. His weyr had white plaster walls and electric lighting, smooth floors and sharp corners. The furniture was new, but the craftsmen who had built it had used beautiful joinery and matched the wood grain-- small touches that made the tables, chairs and wardrobe beautiful. "Yeah," he said after a moment. "Yeah, it really is."

"I like being part of something new. I was maybe the only bronzerider who transferred here before Riyanth rose who _didn't_ want the leadership." D'ren laughed.

"I miss the history of River Bluff Weyr, though," F'lin said as he dropped the bedding onto his unmade bed. He'd make it up later,
perhaps after dinner. "Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. But... it feels odd to be somewhere so _new_."

"River Bluff was only home for me for a little while. What happened was..." D'ren didn't like to think about it. He could still hear the keening, the screams. As terrible as Thread was, at least it was a known danger. When they were in the Weyr they were supposed to be _safe_. "I'd much rather be somewhere new than go back there."

"I think a lot of people think like you do," F'lin said softly. Then he made himself smile again. Today wasn't a day for grief. "Anyway, I'm hungry. Want to show me what the kitchen's good at?"

"Yes." D'ren was happy to move from the subject as well. "Having a freestanding Dining Hall is a novelty, and our staff came from all over so they know how to make a variety of dishes."

"Filled buns?" F'lin asked hopefully.

"Oh! We do have those once in a while. We can ask when they're making them again."

"Well that's a relief." F'lin opened his weyr door and waved D'ren through. "After you!"
