As soon as news of the incident reached Dolphin Cove, N'vanik hurried
to Cyradis's office. "You heard what happened?"

"Yes," she nodded with pain in her eyes. She shook her head. "This
didn't need to happen. She's experienced!"

"Her stupidity got poor Rogueth torn up." N'vanik clenched his fist.
"And cost K'ran his chance." He'd been rooting for the acting
Weyrleader to confirm his place, and now this. "I'm going over to
check on him."

"Take me with you?" Cyradis started to grab her jacket before he could
even answer.

"Yeah, of course. Don't want to bring Panitath into a volatile situation?"

"Don't need her muddying the waters with Chioneth in charge and
Aglayath a bit unstable. I'm sure Saibra can handle it but I just want
to see K'ran.

N'vanik nodded. His stomach churned with anger and fear, hoping
Rogueth would be okay. "Come on." N'vanik headed to his weyr to get
his own jacket and put the riding straps on Loseth. The big bronze was
already waiting, eyes whirling slowly with agitation from his rider's
emotions. N'vanik worked quickly and then vaulted onto Loseth's neck.
He leaned down to offer his Weyrwoman a hand even as Loseth lifted a
forearm to assist her.

In moments she was strapped in behind N'vanik and ready for flight.
**Tell Donneth's where we've gone,** she told her lifemate.

Loseth leapt into the rainy sky and took them/between/. In a few
breaths they were over Dragonsfall and soon got clearance from the
agitated watch dragon. They headed straight for where K'ran was staying
and N'vanik only paused long enough to help Cyradis down before
heading in.

K'ran had already eaten and spoken with D'hol, and he had had a moment
to clean himself up. He was still pale and drawn-looking but he'd
changed into slightly too large clothing that at least wasn't stained
in dragon ichor and was sitting on a couch with a glass of liquor
nearby. He stood up to look at the new entrants.

"N'vanik, Cyradis. How are you both?" His voice was raspy and rough.

"K'ran!" Cyradis ran to the bronzerider and wrapped her arms around
him. "How are you doing and how is Rogueth?"

"Hope we're not bothering you," N'vanik said. "But we had to come check on you."

K'ran never felt dwarfed by Cyradis since they were similar in height,
unlike with taller women. He hugged her back, a little surprised by
the intensity of her greeting, grateful for the physical support she
was providing.

"I don't mind seeing either of you," he told his friend over the
Weyrwoman's shoulder. "With Rogueth out for now, it's nice to not be
alone with my thoughts."

Cyradis let him go after a final squeeze. K'ran was a good man and had
been a good Weyrleader. To be robbed of his chance to win the position
again was a very hard thing. "How is he doing?"

"He's unconscious for now, I believe with some assistance from the
other golds. Aglayath's talons laid open a chunk of his belly. W'ser
says there's risk of bowel perforation or infection, and the wounds
will take at least two sevendays before they close to permit
/between/," he explained.

"That sharding wherry-brained goldrider," N'vanik growled, his fingers
tingling with the urge to strangle that woman. He took a breath and
shook his head. "But Rogueth will heal?"

"Assuming that none of those worst cases are true." K'ran had to
uncurl his hands. "I heard from D'hol he and Kapera are going to shred
her."

"Any gold rider of her experience who let's her lifemate get away from
her like that deserves it," Cyradis nearly spat the words. She shook
her head. "There has to be more to it. Though I have heard things
about Ashela that aren't pleasant." Weyrwomen talked to eachother and
she'd been warned about the woman's ambition.

"If there's anything left of her when they're done, I want a piece of
her too," N'vanik said.

For once she was in complete agreement with her Weyrleader. "I'm very
sorry you lost the chance to be Weyrleader K'ran." Her brows drew
together as she scowled at the thought of what Ashela had done.

"I'm disappointed. Barrier Lake project, it felt almost like a child
in a way, and being its Weyrleader would have been an honor, but..."
He shook his head again. "Losing Rogueth would be far, far worse."

N'vanik nodded. Losing a dragon was the worst thing that could happen
to a rider. He'd seen what it had done to Talryne, and she was
stronger than most. "If you want to come back to Dolphin Cove, we'd be
happy to have you."

"Absolutely," Cyradis confirmed with a firm nod.

That let him muster a smile. He appreciated their consideration and
concern. "Thank you. I'll think about it, I'll certainly have time to
consider where I'm going over the next few days." Which was really all
kinds of an understatement.

"And if you need anything, just let us know." N'vanik gave him a pat
on the shoulder.

He settled into a couch and gestured at them to sit if they wanted. He
was still feeling somewhat unsteady on his feet. "What news had
spread? Who won, as well as the fight?"

Even dazed by Rogueth's injury and knowing he'd gone and lost the
change to be a leader, his mind couldn't entirely turn off. He was
still concerned about the way everything was spinning, what it seemed
like outside of the bubble of the chaos of what had went down.

Cyradis looked to N'vanik. She rather felt the news should come from
one Weyrleader to the other so she looked down avoiding the question
and found her seat quietly.

N'vanik sat and tried to think of what K'ran wanted. The other
bronzerider cared about the new Weyr and its reputation, so N'vanik
tried to present the information in that light. "News of Riyanth
rising first and D'hol winning is out. News of what happened with
Aglayath is just spreading, I think we were some of the first to hear
it." Of course with dragons it wouldn't take long for it to make its
way across Pern. "This isn't on Barrier Lake, or its leaders. This is
completely Ashela's fault." He tamped down on another surge of anger.
"I'm on good terms with the Harper Hall. Just say the word and I'll
commission a heroic ballad about you and Rogueth."

She watched the two bronzeriders faces and realized this was going to
be a difficult nut to crack, for everyone involved. She'd planned on
suggesting Ashela be transferred to Dolphin Cove but could tell
N'vanik would be... resistant. She'd been on the receiving end of his
firm convictions in the past so she'd have to classify that idea as
bad, for now. But she'd put a bug in Saibra's ear. She had
confidence in the Dragonsfall Weyrwoman's ability to handle another
goldrider of Ashela's ilk. "I like that idea N'vanik," she smiled at
his comment about the ballad.

K'ran's skin flushed. "A heroic ballad? Really? I can't say I'm not
flattered, but was it that dramatic? But if you think it's a good idea
for the Hall to do that…"

"Rogueth risked his life to prevent two queens from fighting," N'vanik
said. "He likely saved both their lives. I'd say that's sharding
heroic."

Cyradis cleared her throat. "Well as much as I feel that would be a
very good idea, we need to discuss what should be done with Ashela."
Ever the pragmatic goldrider, Cyradis knew both men were also
concerned on that topic but the two of them seemed to be mired in
another subject. "I hardly think either D'hol or you for that matter
wish to see her remain at Barrier Lake."

K'ran admitted, "It would be very hard to look at her every day."

"I am thinking we need to ask Saibra to take her," Cyradis shrugged

"Saibra's a smart, sensible woman who can handle her if anyone can, if
she won't, perhaps another Southern Weyr will. Hopefully not you two,
you deserve better," K'ran agreed.

His hand trembled as he reached for his glass of water. "Thank you for
stopping by, but I think I need to lie back down for a bit."

"Of course," N'vanik said. "Rest up, K'ran. I hope Rogueth heals
soon." He cursed Ashela again and was glad Cyradis hadn't suggested
taking her. They'd taken Lanniya for a while after she'd taken a
stupid risk, but the girl had been barely out of weyrlinghood and her
intentions had been good, even understandable in a way. But Ashela?
She was experienced and had risked the lives of two queens out of
nothing more than selfish ambition. It wasn't that he didn't trust
Cyradis to control her, it was that he didn't want Ashela in his Weyr.

"I do too," K'ran said. Because the alternative was unthinkable.
